Yoga Anyone?
Jamie, I've not tried yoga but before my surgery I worked with a personal trainer who emphasized core exercises. It made a huge difference; just be sure you get one who is aware of your back problems and knows how to work around them. "No pain no gain" is NOT the philosophy you're after if you're having issues w/ your spine. You might also consult a chiropractor, most of them are very familiar w/ yoga and could probably recommend a yoga practice for you. Good luck.
LOL, I just posted today in the Exercise and Fitness forum about how I'm in love with Yoga! I've just started but I am hooked! It's so wonderful to get a whole body and mind workout.
As for your core, balancing or rather things that put you off balance are the best. I don't know what you have available but working with those giant balls, bozu balls, balance boards, or just standing on one leg at at time. Anything where you have to work to stay upright is going to demand your core develop.
I agree tho, that you should talk to your doc about modifications before you do anything weight bearing or yoga so that they can tell you what positions to avoid!
Good Luck

I love my Yoga!!!! I'm taking a class at the YWCA and am truly enjoying the benefits of attending. I like the slower types of Yoga though; it's more of a meditation for me.
Although I haven't tried it, I've heard that Pilates does wonders for the core muscles. It's not high impact that I'm aware of and if what I've heard is true, it may work wonders for your back.
Regards,
Danny

I just started yoga in the last few months. I like it for helping with stress (you need to do something else besides eat ) and flexibility.
If you have a good instructor or dvd, it can help with your back too.
Sometimes back gets messed up because of the extra tummy hang too. I like walking, running, bands, lifting weights, yoga...all can be helpful. If you are having major back issues I would consult your doc or physical therapist though. If you have Netflix, they have some streaming Yoga for Health that I enjoy. The cobra, downward dog and several other poses can be good for backs.
Hope your back is better soon, remember to work both sets of opposing muscle groups!
