Ran my first race.....

It was not an 'official' race, but a friend of mine sponsors a 6K fun run 2 times per year.  I was too 'chicken sh*t' in the spring to try it, but being that I am almost one year out from surgery, I decided to give the fall event a try.

I have been running for several months now, but really only on a treadmill.  I usually work out at 4:30 in the morning, so the thought of running outside at that time is a bit intimidating.

Not only did I do it, but I was pretty happy with my time......6k (3.7 miles) in 37:58......just about 10 minute miles.  My main goal was to finish and to maintain the approximate pace I have been running in the gym, which I did.

I also quickly realized that you use some different muscles running outside.....nothing major, but I have been a bit sore in the inner thighs from working out 'different' muscles.

I am running a 5k on Thanksgiving morning, so this was my warm up event.  I just need to try and get outside to run more often!

That's awesome, and a great PR!!  I hope you continue to enjoy running.

Are you looking to do longer races, half's and/or full marathons?

I can't imagine ever running 26.2 miles......but then again, who knows what a few years from now might bring!

Great job! 10 minute mile is pretty darn good. I have decided to try some running this coming year. I want to get a few 5Ks and maybe 10K under my belt. I mostly just want to see if I can do it. A bariatric pal of mine who runs is organizing a Couch to 5K program for bariatric patients in late winter and early spring. I think it will be an excellent opportunity to give it a try. Thanks for sharing. It is always good to her these stories.  -- Tom

Congratulations! Great job on keeping up a really good pace. One of my goals is to get back to running; I'm shooting for the 2012 Peachtree Road Race here in Atlanta, our annual 10K on July 4 every year. After that, who knows--could be triathlons! Your achievement is amazing! Keep up the good work and let us know how you're doing.
