Another newbie
I've been researching for about 7 years and finally got approval! My partner has spent the last 7 years attempting to talk me out of this. However, this is something I have to do for myself. I know her disapproval is because of her concern something will happen to me. I think once I get to goal she'll realize this was something I had to do for myself.

Congrats! I'm sure your partner is just worried - this is major surgery. My now wife was so freaked out about my having my WLS. Her cousin passed away a few years back from complications after WLS. So my wife was extremely nervous. But 2 years later, 130 lbs later, and we're married now. She is my biggest supporter. Good luck Shannon!
Congratulations to you! We are also married! 8-15-2008! We were so lucky to be married here in California. We had a few friends who waited to plan their "dream" wedding and lost the chance, sadly. Congratulations on your weight loss as well!

We live in California too. We were married on 4/23/11. So it's "legal" under God and our friends and family, but it's not legal under Cali law :-( But we are registered domestic partners here in Cali. But once it does become legal again we'll be 1st in line to make our marriage legal.
Where in Cali are you? We're in San Jose.

I'm in the Sacramento area! I can't wait for the day we can all get married whenever we want! We were domestic partners first also, in 2005. Very romantic day. We both wore white shirts to the notary and then went out to eat at Chili's! Hahaha! Your avatar must be from your wedding, I'm sure it was a gorgeous day for both of you!

Welcome Shannon!
Your partner's concerns are normal. Your change in diet, life, and exercise will ease her concerns. Surgery always has risk. The risk of WLS is minimal and no different than most surgeries. The benefits you reap are well worth it. Best of luck!

Hi Shannon,
Congrats on your approval. Get your wife involved so she knows what to expect. My wife came with me to the seminar and to most of my preop appts so she could understand the major change that was going to take place. Her having this knowledge was very helpful in helping to calm her worries.

Welcome and congratulations on getting approval! I was in a relationship when my saga began, and my partner at the time was against surgery. I think as one other poster said, it was simply fear that something would happen to me. We have since parted ways (for other reasons) but are getting along OK, and she is trying to be supportive (she'll be with me at the hospital for my surgery). I would suggest that your partner learn as much about your particular type of WLS as she can. Encourage her to ask questions and if possible, take her with you when you visit your surgeon. Won't take away all her fears, but at least she'll have a better idea of what to expect.
You are right, though, when you say this is something you must do for yourself. I got tired of dealing with Type II diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, etc...I want to be able to run and play tennis again, whether I'm single or in a relationship! You will love the folks on this forum -- very supportive. Best of luck to you!
