RNY and Pain in the lower left tummy area?

So following my RNY surgery on the 17th things were going well pain-wise, then this week I had a burning sharp pain on the lover left side (towards the front) part of my stomach. I had my follow-up meeting with my surgeon yesterday, everything looked good and he said the recovery was on track....he explained that some folks do get this pain. It is in an area that typically does not get "touched" in the process but it is on a side where a lot of the instrumentation and camera goes in. He explained that this pain will pass in time, he felt around the area and checked my scars etc.... The pain happens when I bend or sometimes if I am sitting for a bit and get up.....has anyone who has had RNY experienced this? How long did this pain last?
I find that even the pain med is not really helpful because it seems to be a kind of muscular type of pain....any experiences like this?

Other than this I seem to be doing well, walking, taking my vitamins, antacids etc. and making daily efforts to get the required protein and liquid in! I can hardly believe I have lost 10 lbs. already....such a weird but happy feeling!

I was 2-3 post op when I developed a similar pain. The doc just told me it was "normal" but didn't explain about the instruments. Makes total sense. I kinda wondered if it was a blood clot in the lungs but it wasn't.

For me, the pain lasted a couple of weeks but was never severe enough for meds. It really did feel like a strained muscle. Have you tired soaking in a hot tub? That might help.

Keep up the good work.

a post op friend just told me that she had pain on the lower left side and that when you have an RNY that is where they 'attach/tack' your intestines"?? I hadn't heard that before...

I think some aches and pains are normal and just because something hurts in an area, doesn't mean that is the area that got hurt. If that makes sense.

Sounds like things are overall going good and you have lost weight already!! Congratulations!!

Okay so the pain got real bad yesterday... my partner called my surgeon's answering service, he talked to some of his colleagues and then prescribed me a topical gel called Voltaren. It is kind of like an anti-infilamatory and aspirin type gel,....This has helped tremendously! He said if this did not work he would have tried a Lydex patch...anyway I picked it up the gel at Walk mart this morning and tonight the pain is much much better...whew!

He said that about 15-20% of folks that go through the RNY will have this and that is does subside...the pain for me was vey deep and burning, he said it varies in everyone, but again it is "normal"...I am just thankful they found  something for it that works for me!

Thanks for the follow-up...:-) Xico

Glad you called your doc.  Getting other people's opinion can be helpful, but talking to your surgeon is always the best option.  Glad that the topical is helping.  Rest up... it is common.  It takes some time to heal.  Be gentle with yourself.  And congrats on dropping dem pounds so quickly! woot woot
