I'm 2 1/2(ish) years post op. Since last June I've been having seizures. This history to this story goes like this: I've been having a lot of been in my back and the back of my legs. I've had 6 plus steroid injections in my back ...but pretty much started taking Neurontin for neuropathy to help the ridiculous pain in my legs that shoots from one end to the other.

You guys may know about Neurontin ...it IS a med they give to patients to HELP with seizures. Soo...everyone is thinking the seizures aren't from the med. BUT since I started taking it I stutter and my speech slurs. This happens about an hour after I take so I pretty much stopped taking it in the day because let's face I need to freakin function in public and not sound stupid.

So I'll either have these really big seizures that I don't remember at all until someone tells me or I have these "drops". Where I literally just DROP. I don't ever remember the fall ...I always remember hitting the floor, as if hitting the floor is what wakes me. So I had one of these drops a week or so ago and was taken to the ER by ambulance. I don't remember everything. I remember hitting my head on this lady's hard wood floor. I remember being asked by the EMT's the same questions over and over. I remember hearing one of them say 'she is about to seize again' ...but I didn't. I just kept uncontrollably twitching and awake the whole time. About 30 minutes after I got to the hospital I felt normal again.

I keep reading article after article.

Is it because I have problems with reactive hypoglycemia?

My blood work is normal except vitamin D was low.

Nothing is physically or mentally wrong with me other than the back and leg problems.

I keep reading all these things from gastric bypass patients who are now suffering from seizures and it scares me. I really am unsure about a lot. Sometimes I wish I never had this surgery and just lost the weight on my own. I never wanted this. Sure, I'm thin. But other things are in jeopardy. I'm scared of hurting myself when I fall.

This blows.

Aw Brooke, I'm sorry you're still dealing with all of this.  I've been keeping up with your health stuff on FB and I hope it gets better for you.  Neurontin can be used for seizures, but it's typically for neuropathy and you should probably be on something else for the seizures themselves....the stuttering and slurs are a type of seizure, I *think* they used to call them petit mals.  I can't remember what they're called now!

Hey Brooke. I have seen some of your troubles on FB too but I didn't know any of this stuff was going on. I'm sorry you are suffering so much.

I have a number of clients on Neurontin as well, although they take it for mood stabilization. I have had a client on Topomax ( similar anti seizure med used for mood stabilization) have a number of neurological side effects- parasthesias( losing sensation in her extremities), felling fogged in after taking the med, memory changes etc... no seizure issues though. She has also complained that she can't find words. Her symptoms intensify when her dosage goes above a certain amount. There has never been any evidence of any pre-existing neuro problems with her, and although she is upset at having to stop themed as it works to manage her mood, these side effects mean that it is contraindicated for her and she had to come off of it.

My question is, have you had a pre-existing seizure disorder before starting this med? Have you had an EEG to assess your brain waves for seizure activity? There is a very strong possibility that you are having adverse neurological side effects to the Neurontin that looks like seizure stuff but is impacting your ability to remember, talk, have balance etc... I hope you are working with your doc to consider getting off of it and onto something else to address your pain.

Hang in there. You must be doubting alot of things not to mention scared as well.Let us know how you are doing. I know from your honey's posts that she is worried about you. Get lots of hugs, okay?

I started taking the Neurontin in June ..the same month the seizures started :(

I've had so far bloodwork, EEG, and a cat scan done.

I had an appt with a neurologist in December who told me these things weren't happening ..that it was a form of narcolepsy. I kind of was pissed at his bed side manner and his "findings" so I never went back. When I went to the ER last week he asked which neurologist I was seeing and what he thinks. I told him about the narcolepsy and he said he was thinking the same thing, though he didn't discharge me with anything saying that.

Thanks guys :)
