any thoughts on your choice of surgery and why.
I need your 2 cents. I am really having a hard time with having to choose.
I would like to lose 80-90 pounds. (if that makes a difference)

newbie here.

Hi  :-)

I don't know much about the sleeve procedure, but for me I needed to do the most drastic most permanent solution. That's just how I work and they didn't really talk about the sleeve at my orientation. RNY was by the far the best option and decision I made.

Hey Drea,

We're neighbors! I'm in San Jose.  I had RNY and I know a few ppl that have had the sleeve.  I coordinate a WLS support group at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose. We meet every 2nd Tuesday and 4th Thursday of each month.  So we're mtg Tues 1/11 & Thurs 1/27.  Mtg goes from 7-9pm.  Lotsa Kaiser patients come to our support group.  It's a great opportunity to hear from people at all stages of this journey and we have RNY, Sleeve, and Banders come to our group.

As far as LGBT in our group goes... Well... I'm there! :-)  My gf comes with me sometimes and there are a couple other LGBT folk that come to our meeting a well.  The rest of the group is really gay-friendly.

Feel free to PM me or you can add me on facebook... www.facebook.com/musicmaryn

I'm happy to chat with you about the differences btwn RNY and VSG.  OH... and a big old welcome to our family board!  The folks here are great... met some of my greatest friends on this board.

Ooooo, I commute to work in the south bay and can never make it back up to the Kaiser support groups in Richmond (where I had my surgery) on time. Perhaps I will check out the support group at Good Sam. Where in the hospital does the support group meet?

We meet in the portable conference rooms in the back of the hospital.  It's right next to the East Entrance.  There is a suggested fee of $5 for non-Good Sam patients (just to help cover the costs.)

All are welcome!  We're doing a really cool Visioning exercise during our next support group on Tues 1/11.  PM me your email address and I'll put you on our mailing list for the support group.

Hey Drea...

I'm newly sleeved (12/14) and I really didn't have much of a choice...due to Hep C & Liver cirrhosis, I didn't qualify for RNY. When I started the journey, I was already decided on the sleeve...the first surgeon turned me down based on liver & blood work, but my current surgeon said let's give it a whirl and see if they'll approve you. The band was not an option for me...there's only certain specific foreign bodies I want inside me...and the band is definitely not one of them (how's that for PC? LOL)...

When I started, Cigna was not covering the sleeve, but now is...so I was lucky. After over a year of research & taking w/folks on-line, especially those 2-3+ years out, I'm so grateful that this was an option for me. I have friends that had the RNY 6mos-10 years ago, and the process & procedures have improved incredibly over time...most are happy w/their results as well.

The thing to remember about whichever surgery you do have (as reminded to me by my surgeon yesterday) that you can gain all your weight back no matter what surgery you have...it's all about using the gift of a second chance as a tool, and with this tool you must learn to change your ways...I'm so grateful Cigna required a 6-month waiting period, and actually I went from the end of Jan 2010, was approved end of October and sleeved 12/14, so almost 11 months of learning, accepting and adjusting my mind-set and way of life...hell, when I cheated during my 70#+ weight loss on my own, I cheated very healthy! LOL It just didn't appeal to me to overdo it anymore...I've been in the zone for months now and I know I'm going to be successful, a day at a time!

Perfect example..Thanksgiving...my pre-op diet started on 11/30 so Thanksgiving was my last big hurrah...I typically would eat 3 plate fulls and 4-5 desserts...I had one moderate, not-over-flowing plate, 3 small pieces of pie...and I was able to whip through the the table and kitchen clean-up...and I was not giving my traditional 'Oh my god I can't move' groans that my family does in memory when I'm not there...LOL (when I've lived away, they would call me when they're done w/dinner & give me a 10-12 person groan over the phone...LOL)

I'll assume you've been hanging out on both boards...but throw questions out there...you'll find everyone will offer their advice, guidance along with their own 'experience, strength & hope'. Coming down the home stretch a month before surgery when I was having those 2nd, 3rd & 4th thoughts...chatting with those who were >2&3 years out really put my mind at ease...it was about acceptance for me...I was not at all nervous, I was at peace with my decision...and today I am sooooo grateful for the support here, the procedure and for my surgeon who took me on...

Yes, I am a rambler...but I hope this helps...spend some time on the RNY & Sleeve boards...throw out the same question, you'll find a lot of great feedback!

Good luck!

James
