Sex , Drugs and Surgery

Catchy title eh? Hey there I am just another newbie hoping to meet some new people. Saw there was a LGBTQ board and wet my pants a little. I am waiting to talk to a surgeon about surgery and am having a hard time deciding for myself between the RNY & banding that ***** Personal choice I know but I'm into some feedback if you can.

A little about me 28, F, genderqueer (gotta get have a label)  from the land of bigotry and actors  acting as politicians:Cali. Into going drag but in my small town area, that is not much as there are just no venues or troops sadly.

So where did the sex and drugs & surgery come form in my title. Well surgery, thats an obvious one. But my real question is anyone smoke pot before or after surgery, and how did that go? I smoke on occasions and am just curious if anyone had to quit or just did because it the "right thing to do" before or after surgery? Curious of the effect and if it helped with your post op nausea or when your qwag'd did hurt your site in any way?

And last and absolutly not least, the sex. Did it get better, you know not to sound crass but just the truth of the matter, did it make things a little more accessible and sensation better? Just curious you know before I take the big plunge. Curiosity ain't gonna kill this cat.

Okay and WTF is this?   The smilies on here are hilarious!

Catchy question. The icon is the the constipation is my guess. Fequently a side effect for me in the beginning.

Since pot is a drug my advice is to disclose to your surgical team your use and amount of use.
You will be asked to list all the rest of your meds as part of the screening. If they do a tox screen as part of the evaluation you need to know that pot lasts a good 30 days in the tissues and will be detected and other illegal substances may be as well. If positive your team may or may not see you as a viable candidate for either surgery but I don't know that for sure. You could google it.

As for your question about nausea, I had both the lap-band and a couple years later a RNY.
Neither caused me nausea. (PS the lap-band did not work for me.)

As for sex..dunno...

However either procedure  will not improve your pants wetting.

Welcome to the community.

Warning: If you tell any doctor involved in the surgery process, especially the psychologist doing your mental health eval, that you smoke pot, they will probably tell you that you need to be sober for a year before you can be considered for the surgery. Because if you smoked pot post surgery, the munchies could kill you. *deadpan* Yes, I'm serious. A full year. Totally sober. Won't even consider you.

I have no problem with alcohol, never have. I don't like being hungover. After not going out to drink in about five years, I went out drinking with some hard-drinking friends. I got so drunk I don't know how I got home that night. I freely told my evaluating psychologist this. I told her I otherwise rarely drink, and when I did drink I didn't drink past getting tipsy. At my results session, she told me I was a binge drinker, and I had to be totally sober from alcohol for a year to get surgery. This was at Bariatric Center #1. When I want to Abbott, (which was more than a year later), I simply said I don't drink, and from intro class to surgery date was 61 days.

I don't smoke anything ...but I know that some surgeons WILL test! So the obvious thing to do is if your surgeon is going to test than you should probably quit. I know my surgeon won't even consider the surgery if people haven't stopped smoking cigarettes.

As for sex ..yup it gets easier. In my opinion. But when you feel you look like a deflated balloon than it just takes away all those great feelings!! Ahh...head games.

I had RNY a year ago. I didn't smoke before so I can't really comment on that. But the sex question... let me tell you... BOMB ASS SEX NOW!!! Since I've released so much weight and I've been working out a lot, I'm a LOT more flexible and strong. So my partner and I now do things in bed (or the front porch or the car or where ever...) that I have never done but have seen in some good porn movies! hahaha. Yes I have extra skin (aka: deflated tits) but my partner loves me for me. I have become so much more confident with my body now that I'm 130 lbs smaller and I feel totally sexy now. I've done a sexy strip dance for her! OMG... never in a million years would I ever consider doing anything like that when I was a fat chick. So since we can do so much more, sex is frickin' amaaaaaaazing! Ya... I could go on and on about that but since she's not here today, that would just be self-torturous.

Oh, in deciding between the band and the RNY, they are very different surgeries that have positive and negative benefits of their own. Make sure you research both and weigh your options (no pun intended.) Feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to chat more about it. I'm on facebook: www.facebook.com/musicmaryn

Peace!

Hi,

I'm pre- op but I was told that they were going to test me for ciggarettes, so I assumed the would test for pot also so I quit both at the same time! I originally wanted info about the lap band but when the surgeon said that I have a chance of leaving the hospital without insulin, I decided that was the to go! Plus you don't have as many maintenance appts after....
Im only assuming that sex will get better! I recently gained most of my weight so my self esteem and body image have changed sex drive drastcally! I'm originally from CA, are you in LA?

Thanks for all the great info guys. Really appreciate it. Still very undecided about what surgery but I am sure or at least hope things become a little more clear after my consult. Had my last "hurrah" last night with smoking. It was nice, I am sure not smoking will help in so many aspects of being more motivated and successful. But I will miss my old friend. I am on the central coast of california, near San Luis Obispo. Great, great place to live! Anyone near here hit me up, I am down to go hiking....up a mole hill maybe.

Hey, great questions. I too was thrilled to find the lgbt section and was wondering about the sex as well. I am pleased that the responses are very positive! Quitting smoking is a pre-requisite in the program I'm in at Kaiser in Richmond. During the psych eval, I was asked alot of questions about present and past drug use. If you admit to using even on occasion, they will probably tell you to quit and it may delay the whole process.

I'm also new to this board, in California (bay area) and am currently doing pre-op preparations. I've been oriented, had lab work and ekg, am doing the pre-op meal plans, met with surgeon, had psych eval and am half way to my pre-op goal weight. Once I reach the goal weight I can get a date (for surgery).

I went into this a month and a half ago adamant that I would not consider RNY because of the mortality rate, rerouting issue and permanence of it. I was sure that the only surgery I would consider is the Lap Band, however, the more research I did - the more I became leary of all of the maintainence it requires and the possibility of slippage, erosion and longer term issues. I then started thinking about the Gastric Sleeve and was wavering between that and the Lap Band. When I met with the surgeon, he told me her wouldn't do Lap Band on someone my age (I'm 37) because with 40+ years of life expectancy left, I would surely have erosion down the road and require another surgery. He strongly recommended RNY over the Vertical Gastric Sleeve because it is the "gold standard" and has been practiced, studied and improved upon for the past 40 years. I disucssed all of my concerns about it and he addressed them and dispelled some unwarranted fears. Besides talking to the surgeon, I also did a lot of my own research and reading about those three options. I watched videos of the laproscopic procedures on youtube, which was pretty cool and helped me to feel more comfortable. I've pretty much made the decision to go with the RNY.

I would recommend taking a list of questions and concerns to your appt with the surgeon and have them all addressed... Good luck!

I second that motion - RNY all the way, for all the reasons listed above.
