I finally got my date!!!!!
Hi again all this is joe and i thought i would check in and share the good news. My surgery date is september 30th, wow thats so close But im very excited and a little mad i had to wait for 2 hrs to see him for 5 minutes but he told me that i should get the sleeve and i think it would be a good idea a little less trauma on the organs lol!! Has anyone had a vsg i would like to know your opinion its either this or a roux en y, any thoughts.
Congratulations Joe, The next few weeks will fly by and you will be on your journey to a healthier life.
I know a few people who have had the VSG. In my opinion, the results are very comparable to the RNY, and it is less malabsorbtive, however removing so much of the stomach with the sleeve also removes a lot of a hormone called Ghrelin. That is the controversal part of the sleeve that I have heard about. I guess Ghrelin controls pleasure or mood or something like that. Now I am NOT a medical professional, but I do work for a large group of bariatric surgeons. It is my understanding that it is a personal choice, but you are either trading malbsortion for ghrelin or vise versa if that makes any sense. If you are still undecided, you should really talk to your surgeon about his or her thoughts on the removal of ghrelin and it's effects on you after surgery vs the malabsorbtion of RNY, where as the ghrelin remains because remnant stomach remains.

First of all, congrats on a date! Waiting is so hard, but it's SO worth it!
As far as the VSG... I love it!!! The restriction is amazing. I can only eat a few Oz. of food at a time. The weightloss is phenomenal so far. I never did much research on the RNY as I know a couple who lost and regained with it, and that wasn't something I was willing to risk. I had researched the Lap Band, however was never to keen on the idea of the foreign object floating around in side there, nor the port. So when the VSG became more main stream, and a friend got it and had great results, then I knew it was the right one for me.
Good luck with whatever you decide, and if you have more specific questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
