Hi again all this is joe again. I have been makeing quite a change, since may 14th  ive lost a  total of 21 pounds by myself by eating alot less which is very exciting but also makes me worry quite a bit. I am very afraid of losing weight and not being able to get my rny surgery in october, Which if i can get to my goal by myself is wonderful, but what i worried about is that i will not be able to get the surgery and then i will gain it back, see last summer i lost a total of 36 over the summer and when summer was over i gave up and wasnt as active and gained almost all of it back since then. Any words of wisdom or advice, it would be greatly apprciated

Joe,

Congrats on losing so much weight on your own! Any weight loss is a major accomplishment. I assume you are worried that if you lose too much weight that your BMI will be below the insurance minimum BMI for surgery approval. I was in a similar situation. I was slightly above 40 BMI when I started. I had numerous comorbidities and according to my insurance guidelines I could qualify for surgery at 35 BMI. Well, I lost some weight and came down to around 36 BMI if I  remember correctly; still above the guideline.

Remember that this is a guideline and is not just about that guideline. As you go though the approval process they look at medical conditions and comorbidities, psychological testing. other tests and doctor and surgeon recommendations. It's the whole picture. I am not aware of what your BMI is but I suspect you have some wiggle room. I would proceed as your surgeon recommends and do all tests and follow orders. That's the best way to be sure you are approved. Also, lose whatever weight you can. This is teaching you good eating habits and a structured routine that will help you after surgery.

I hope this helps you out. Best of luck on your journey. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself.

Tom

you hit the nail on the head.  for many people preparing for surgery and trying to lose the request amount of weight to lose prior to surgery, many people ask that if you can do that much on your own, why have the surgery?  Well just for the reason you said.  I know in my case, it was something that I could not keep doing because eventually, I'll hit a wall and give up.  Since I was a super obese person, hitting the cutoff BMI was not an issue as I am STILL yet considered obese after losing what i have lost LOL  However, like what Tom said, you're following directions per your doctor and this will actually show the insurance company that you are serious about this.  Don't fret none handsome :)
