Newbie - Question on my Liquid Diet
Hello everyone,
I had the RNY surgery on 4/21 this month. I was in the hospital that Wed night, Thurs night, and Friday night. Got out on Saturday afternoon after I had one hell of a panic attack, and decided I needed to go home.
I am following my guidelines to the best of my ability, but I'm just at a loss to accept my lack of water intake. Is it too early still? I am drinking about 1oz of water for most of my waking hours. When I'm not trying to down some chicken broth which I can no longer drink with water anylonger because I get awful dumping. But it also seems like just plain water at 1oz gives me the squirts too.
Please tell me this is normal... or that I am doing something wrong. I'm just drinking water or chicken broth from a box, nothing else. I can deal with that, as long as I will eventually be able to drink more water, I'm starting to think I might be getting a bit dehydrated. At least in the hospital they kept me on an IV, I'm starting to think I left a bit too early.

First off welcome!!!
Congrats on the surgery!! I was told to try and get in at least 4oz of water an hour. I was also told not to drink 30 minutes before, during or 30 minutes after you eat as that can cause dumping syndrome. My system was a little different right after surgery and I spent alot of time in the bathroom, it eventually evens out, so keep following your dr's advise. It gets better and easier!!! congrats again!!

Are you talking about dumping as in pooping or dumping as in dumping syndrome?
Diarrhea at this stage is normal since all you are "eating" is liquids. I was told to do 4 ounces PER hour which would be 1 ounce every 15 minutes. And my center doesn't really recommend sleeping all day. They encourage to walk alot and keep moving. Sleeping all day will slow things down and you really gotta get that fluid in ..you can't do that sleeping.
I was also allowed jello and sugar free popsicles. Look into it. It might help with some variety and put more spring in your step :)

Thanks guys, that helps a lot. I was following the guidelines published by the hospital, and printouts given to me. When I mentioned "dumping" I figured it might be what the community refers to the "Dumping Syndrome" but in my specific case, it's just the plain ole squirts, with a very acrid odor. I thought they might be one and the same, as my stomach is constantly at war with my body now.
I'm going to give your advice a try... especially the 4oz of water an hour. That just seems more right, perhaps it will feel right as well.
I'll let you know how that works out.

Congrats, Cortez:
As above, this is just normal diarrhea due to liquid diet, it is not due to dumping (unless you have a ton of sugar or fat in the broth which I doubt.) I had the same thing for my entire liquid diet. It goes away once you start to get real food in. I spent the entire first week just sipping sipping sipping to get the full 70 gms of protein and 68 oz of fluids in. I kept track using little tick marks on a piece of paper, started first thing in the AM as soon as I woke up because the quicker I could do it, the better I felt (instead of trying to catch up at the last minute in the evening.)
Good luck!

It's refreshing to note that someone else has gone through the exact same thing as me. Things have gotten a bit better, I don't have diarrhea after everything I drink now. Tomorrow will be exactly one week after the surgery, so I'm just clicking off the days until I can switch to something more substantial to eat. The odd thing is I can't wait to drink some milk, or anything that isn't just broth or water!
I have even incorporated the Sugar-free popsicles as noted in a prev post, and some Sugar-free Jello. The Jello I'm not sure about yet, the only thing I like about it is the diffrent texture in my mouth. I like to swi**** around in my mouth a bit before swallowing. That came off a little bad... but I'm sure you get the gist. Yeah, I know that's kinda gross, sorry! I always loved playing with my food, what can I say.
The popsicles on the other hand have been a wonderful and surprising addition to my diet. Cherry is my favorite, and I have to stop myself from eating more than 1 a day! I'd eat the whole box if I gave myself half a chance. So i've also gone back to chewing on ice chips which were always a fav of mine. I just bought some ice, and blasted it to pieces with a rolling pin.
If things keep going well, I may switch to the "FULL Liquid" diet a few days early... if I feel I can stomach it.
Any fantastic ideas for the full liquid? And don't say blended up cheesecake!

Like you, I spent the first two weeks after surgery being severely dehydrated because I was concentrating on getting all my protein in and letting water go by the wayside. Frankly, I lost my taste for water after surgery. They made me drink a whole liter of it before they would release me from the hospital. To this day I can only drink water when I'm super hot. I stick with diet teas that are caffeine free or crystal light. Although for me, crystal light seemed to be too sweet for me early on so I cut the crystal light in half and that seemed to be a better fit for me. Do keep drinking your water although it is hard to get down sometimes and with the mostly liquid diet, expect to have the runs. When you move to more solid food, that will start to go away (not to mention the first taste of food will be like ambrosia! :))
