I just recieved my surgery date . It is going to be on 4-12-10 and I can wait. I'm a little scare, but I guess everyone goes through this nerous period. Can anyone give me some advise on preparing for the surgery and what to expect?

Congrats Allboy!  Follow your doctor's orders.  My dr. had me on a mostly liquid diet for 2 wks pre-op.  It was hard to adjust during those first 2 days, but then it got pretty easy.  I had  2 wks off wk post -op and had help at home for about 4 days after the 2.5 days in the hospital.  I couldn't get out of bed myself for a few days.  It takes stomach muscles to sit up from lying down... the same muscles that are cut during the surgery.  So I highly recommend that you have someone stay with you for a few days once you get home.

As soon as you can and as often as you can, get up and walk around.  The more you walk, the faster your recovery will be.  Before you go into the hospital, try different protein drinks.  They all taste different and everyone has different tastes.  You'll be having protein drinks for a while.  So find one you like.  The best place for me to find the protein drinks is The Vitamin Shoppe. Great prices and a good selection.  See if you have one near you.  Also, stock up on broth type of soups because that's pretty much all you'll be having during your first few days post-op.

I've been pretty successful so far and I'm 6 mos out and down 103 lbs.  My biggest tip:  follow your doctor's orders completey and excersize & drink drink drink water.

You'll be on the losers bench soon!

Thanks so much for the advise. I will definitely follow my doctors orders, but it's also good to hear from people who have been through the surgery.

Congrats!

Get all your post surgery vits and food/drink set up. Have someone to help you out for awhile. I got one of those extension things that grab stuff...it was helpful. Have liquid or melt tab tyelnol. Prior to surgery I busted my butt working out because I wanted to be in shape for the surgery (quite a motivator for me). I did running and walking. I still had some problems afterwards with my breathing but practice some deep breathing, it helps clear the crap out of you after surgery.

Follow your surgeons advice. I had limited food two days prior to surgery....and as soon as you can get up and walk and move yo ass....get on home, on to your new life and on to the loser's bench.

After surgery walk, walks, sip, sip.....exercise is a great way (once you are recouperated) to help your new tool work and to make you feel better. And as an aside....just realize that stalls happen. Focus on your life and staying healthy and active and the weight will come off. I think sitting around moping, worring about stalls and what the scale is saying is not only non productive but sets folks up to fall into the same bad habits with eating....change it up...start a new life style and relationship with food...all the best to you on your WLS journey!!
