Double Transition/Interesting Parallels

Hi Everyone,

I'm pretty new to this site in general, just started working towards getting a lap band a couple of months ago after YEARS of thinking about it. It looks like I'll be having my surgery in mid-March, just waiting on insurance approval and all that good stuff.

I'm so happy to see an LGBT board here. So, here's something really interesting... My partner of 4 years is in the process of transitioning from MtF at the same time as I am looking to undergo WLS.  He's been wanting to do it for just as long as I have but we are both starting the process around the same time. We have so mu*****ommon when it comes to this stuff, the parellels are almost uncanny. One thing I was pondering is how with WLS the surgery is just the start of all the work and in many ways with SRS the surgery is the culmination of all the work.  We are both going to be documenting our journeys on film just to have a record of our personal progress.  I am so amazingly lucky to have such a supportive partner (though he's lucky to have me as well!)

Just thought I would throw this out there. Has anyone else felt that your WLS is similar to transitioning? I have told people that I feel trapped in my fat body and unable to do the things I want and I didn't even realize that my partner was saying the same exact thing (well I did, but it just hit me one day that we REALLY were saying the same exact thing.)

Looking forward to getting to know you all,

Welcome!

I personally only have experience transitioning with WLS, but I'm happy to hear that you and your partner are so supportive of each other- support makes a world of difference!

I have often felt that I should have been male.  I don't plan to transition, but I have little in common with females.  With my VSG surgery, I feel like finally I have a chance to possibly find some happiness.  I know that already with my 35 lbs lost, I can finally tie my own shoes!!  Amazingly, that was a happy moment!!!

Good luck your journies and I am glad you are supportive of each other.

Very interesting idea....I have only done WLS but it has significantly impacted how I veiw myself and life...certainly has been a transition in many ways. I don't know how other's here feel but in one way I feel stronger and more physical and in another more feminine. I think the feminine may be related to other's perceptions about me and how I look.

You and your partner will have many things to compare and transitions to deal with. I echo the sentiment that is it good you both have someone to share with...

Hey TGrl!

Welcome.  And to answer your question, YES!  I absolutely think that WLS is very much a parallel to SRS.  Both procedures are tools to allow us to let go of the body we no longer claim as ours and transition into the body we know is truly ours.

Ironically, my ex-girlfriend (with whom I'm still very good friends and still in love) told me a couple of months after my RNY that she's considering transitioning FtM.  She still hasn't made her decision as to what she wants to do about that, but is finally allowing herself to explore that which she has felt for so many years.

I congratulate both you and your partner for moving forward with letting go of the body you no longer claim as yours and claiming the body you know is truly yours - your transitions.

Hit me up on facebook if your on.  www.facebook.com/musicmaryn
but please do not post anything about my ex-gf on fb as she is on there a lot and this is highly confidential since she has not made up her mind yet.

I don't post very much, and just stopped by today on a whim.

My partner is FtM and we are constantly talking about the parallels.

We had a good laugh once when I said, "You just don't understand what it's like to hate your physical appearance because it doesn't match what's in your head!"

Before I had a chance to think about what I said, he replied, "Wanna bet?"

Good luck with your surgery and with all the changes coming. I hope that you both find the happiness that my partner and I have found.

I'm so happy to have found you guys, who understand.

Got my surgery date (3/17) and my partner got the first dose of hormones 2 days ago. This house is about to get a lot *****ier with the influx of estrogen and me 2 weeks away from a month on liquids. Ohhhh boy!!

A friend of mine who started Estrogen says that she finally understood tears. Good luck with that.

Lucky me, mine is on T. *evil grin*
