I am not ashamed...BUT...

I am triple posting this because I just realized this forum was here! It is always nice to share with extended family!

OK...so here are some random thoughts that I have been having and please forgive me if these are redundant as I'm sure they have been discussed before. My surgery is set for 2/26/10. I have a sit down job so I plan on going back to work 3/8/10. Is that too soon? It seems like plenty of time considering I am 29 and having a closed RNY. I plan on discussing it with my surgeon when I visit with him on 2/11/10 but I just thought I would get your suggestions.

I start my liquid diet on 2/12/10. I plan on sticking with 2 things that I know I can tolerate because I have tested and tried them out. That is EAS Carb Control Protein Shakes, Broth, and water. Is that going to be enough?? It sure doesn't sound like it....lol I am not real thrilled about my protein shake choice but it is the best of the worst so far. Any other suggestions for shakes I might like more?

Lastly, I have not opened up about my upcoming surgery to anyone at work. Everyone thinks I am going on vacation in February.....which technically I am not lying about....it will be a vacation of sorts. I do not wish to keep my surgery a secret because I am not ashamed of it what so ever - - but I am also trying to be realistic and I know people will judge me and have negative things to say and I just don't feel like having that negative energy with be right before surgery so I was just thinking of letting people know once I come back from "vacation".

I have a wonderful support system. My mom, dad, best friend, girlfriend, and one and a half sisters are supporting me 100%. What are your thoughts on letting my co-workers know?

Thanks for listening and sharing your thoughts.

Answers . . . my take
Going back to work totally depends on how everything goes.  One week ish might be pushing it though.

EAS is my choice.  I dislike the powders.  I pretty much lived on what you described for the non-food phase . . . with popsicles, jello and puddings added in.  I would try buying some sugar-free syrups to "spice" up the shakes.

As for work, I have had no negative reactions (that impacted me) before or after surgery.  Everyone was just interested in the process, reasons and details of my decision.  I tend to be a very open (often too) person so I might not be as bothered by direct personal questions as others.  Why not tell them when you get back so you don't worry about reactions before surgery?  I bet they will surprise you!

Keep asking away!  OH has been a wonderful resource and support system for me!

My thoughts:

I don't work but I was told by my surgeon likes people to stay out of work for at least 6 works. NOT because you will be sore and can't do anything but because of the maintenance your body requires. You need to be "on top of your game" when it comes to getting all of your fluids in after surgery. A job can interfere with this "high maintenance" sort of schedule - meetings, you get busy, etc. My fluid schedule after surgery was seriously an ounce of fluid EVERY 15 minutes. Soo...the time off from work really is more for YOU to focus on YOURSELF!

Shakes? I like all of GNC's brands. Building Blocks Vitamins (online order) just came out with a cupcake flavored one. Jello and sugar free popsicles count as a liquid too.

And as for telling people ....I TELL THE WORLD! The only negativity I've ever had was online and I think it was just jealousy. No one has ever said to me in the real world that what I did was wrong or anything. People tell me all the time how proud they are and even when I tell a complete stranger they are like "OH MY GOD YOU DID??" and along comes 100 questions. I love it!!!! Most people want to know what I eat, how much I've lost, what was it like, what are my goals, etc ...people really are JUST interested.

After my open RNY, I was back to work in 3 weeks. I could have used a little more time off, but I felt good.  I recently revised to a DS, and lemme tell you, I needed the complete 6 weeks this time! I know it was a lot more surgery, and I'm 6.5 years older now, but it knocked me on my butt! I'm going back to work tomorrow and a part of me is dreading the commute.

As long as you have no complications, you should be ok to go back, but be careful.

As far as the protein shakes, EAS should be good. You could also get the Atkins RTD shakes.   I bought Syntrax Nectar to mix with water because it's zero carb.

All the best to you!

I went back after 3 weeks to a sit-down job, and I should have waited another week or so.  It was very tough for me to focus, and I because exhausted very quickly.  Don't try and ru**** just go when you feel well enough to go.

Like the others, I tell everyone who asks.  I've never had one person say anything negative to me about it.  They may think it, but I just really don't care.  There have been a couple of people that have asked so many questions, and we've talked about it a lot... one is just finishing up her 6 month supervised diet to get approved for the surgery, and the other is just starting.  I think there is a lot of good that can come of being open about the process.

Besides, everyone will just gossip about how you lost all the weight you're going to lose, and then they'll just assume you're ashamed of what you did... BUT, that's just my thoughts.  :)
