Just checking in
Hi everyone -
Just wanted to check in and wish everyone a happy new year!
I've finally gotten a date for the surgery to remove my thyroid on January 19th. They don't know if I'll need radioactive iodine treatment to get any stray cancer cells, but early indicators look good, so I'm staying positive.
I gained a about 8 pounds over the month of december, but I'm not freaking out too much since I actually started lifting weights more often and upped the amount of weight I was lifting. I'm sure some of it is fat (I stress ate a bit reacting to the holidays and to the cancer), but I'm confident a good chunk of it is muscle. Despite gaining weight, my pants are looser and the 2xl shirts i've been wearing are getting a little looser around the midsection and tighter around the shoulders, so I THINK I'm still moving in the right direction.
I'm still down 221 pounds from my largest (155 since my surgery 14 months ago), so it's hard to get too negative about this weight gain. I'll freak out later if it doesn't come off over the next couple weeks.
I hope all of you are starting off your years right! Life just gets better....

Missed you! Glad to hear that your thyroid cancer is amenable to surgery and radioiodine treatment. I hope you will be in and out of the hospital quickly.
I found the holidays a bit difficult food-wise. I was home and had lots of temptation around . . . to which I succumbed too frequently. I gained 7lbs which has since come off partially since returning to "some of" the rules. I did go to the gym tonight finally after a break over the holidays because the college gym was closed.
Cool about the shoulders, I definitely need some muscles to fill out the skin!

Yeah it's been awfully quiet without you! I'm sending you some good vibes for your upcoming surgery- hope it all goes smoothly!
Keep buildin' those muscles!

Don, You are an amazing man! I hope to meet you some time when I get to California. Your articles, your posts, your attitude and your success. I am amazed how you approach your struggles head on with a great attitude and don't let anything stop you. Best of luck with this surgery. -- Tom
