Hi Tina,

If your surgeon wants you on a presurgery diet, they will often put you on one.  Since I am four years out I don't know what is the current plan. I know most of my friends did a very low carb diet after approval and up until two weeks prior to surgery.  Two weeks until surgery the surgeon provided them with a liquid protien diet. The purpose in this is to reduce the fat buildup around your liver for surgery.

I myself had been part of the Medical University of SC's Weight Loss Clinic for 2.5 years prior to surgery.  I wasn't loosing much but it was well documented and healthy enough my surgeon didn't bother.

Best of luck!!!

Ditto.

If you surgeon wants you on something specific..they will tell you. Usually it's a liquid diet. But my surgeon didn't require it.

However, I did have to lose 15 lbs. before surgery and I went over that with my dietitian. She told me what my diet should consist of, what to avoid, etc.

I have a liquid diet before surgery.  Three days,
no sugar, only one type of protien drink (isopure). Low sodium broth, no sugar added pop cicles, sugar free jello, decaf teas.

I will not recommend a specific diet to loose weight - but loosing weight prior to WLS is always going to decrease the risk of complication during surgery - it is simply easier for the surgeon to see the organs and intestines if you have less omental fat and your liver has reduced it's size. (all patients here are required to loose 8 -10 percent of their body weight before surgery).

I am sure you know how to loose weight? (But like most of us always gain it back).

So choose what suit you best but get started to loose some of the fat:

- I cut out all sugar and everything white (except fish)

I eat a diet with my favorite vegetables and fruit and berries and plenty of lean meat (beef, pork, fish, shellfish, and poultry) and a little amount of carbs (about 4 OZ - every day) and a limited amount of dairy products. I eat until I am full - not counting calories.

I am getting stricter now - with only 4 weeks to my surgery - I have noticed I am getting fuller faster now and I work on:

-reducing portion sizes
-eating slower and more mindful
-getting some exercise (I hate it) but I walk and ride my bike and do some home exercises - to get used to making exercise a priority in my life - I may be totally out of shape - but I can walk and do low impact exercises - no excuses (I like it afterwards!).

I also take my time to try some recipes and products I think I will like post-op - some of the soups and protein shakes were awful ... I thought I would like them - but I didn't - the ones I made from ground are so much better! I have gotten variety packs of different protein types, so I can order more post-op besides the ones I know I like - but I do prepare  - in case I develop lactose intolerance post-op. Just don't buy too much pre-op ....

Take time to read blogs, books (like WLS for dummies) and cook books for WLS

One trick - think before every bite - "is this high quality food, nutritious, will it be good for my body, mind and soul? Otherwise pass ...

Good luck with your pre-op diet and preparations!
