Working Out

ok I know some of y'all are muscle heads now and work out....

Whats the deal with it?
Eat more calories when you work out?
How can you tell if it's muscle weight? (ie the scale doesnt move but you're supposidly loosing fat and gaining heavier muscle)  (Check measurements?)
What do you eat before you work out?
What do you eat after you work out?

I'm busting my ass (literally) and the scale really isn't moving.  (and I just keep saying oh it's muscle weight)

M- Cardio 1/2 hour Weights 45 minutes
T- Aerobics 45 Minutes Weights 45 Minutes
W - Cardio 1/2 Hour Weights 45 Minutes  (Some days this is a skip day)
T Aerobics 45 Minutes Weights 45 Minutes
S - Zumba 1 hour

When I do weights I do all 18 machines 2 reps of 10.  I've pretty mu*****reased my weights from 10-50 lbs over the past 2 weeks (depending on the machine)

I know I'm toning up... (my arms and shoulders really show it as do parts of my legs)

I just don't know enough about working out properly to know if I'm missing something.

Share the knowledge :-)

Eat more calories when you work out?

Yes, for normal peope. We already eat the way we're supposed to as if we're going to the gym. A diet rich in protein and low in fat. Calories are already a trade off for us since we use them as a vehicle to get our high protein diet. Don't change your diet unless you're eating fatty foods. However, no matter what you should increase your fluid intake.

How can you tell if it's muscle weight?

Well, that's kinda tricky but if you measured yourself in inches before you started working out you can keep track of the fat loss. For example: Your chest was 54" before you started working out and now it's 48" but the scale hasn't budged, it's the fat you've lost not the muscle.

What do you eat before you work out?

I just have a protein shake.

What do you eat after you work out?

A protein shake on the drive home and then a meal rich in protein and low in fat.

Now, a word of advice. If you go to the gym every other day as opposed to every day you'll be less likely to burn out.

Here is my work out routine:

Monday:

Cardio: 30 minutes
Weights: Chest/Triceps

Wednesday:

Cardio: 30 Minutes
Weights: Back/Biceps

Friday:

Cardio: 30 Minutes
Weights: Shoulders/Legs
Note about legs: Because we're still overweight our legs do not need a workout. Cardio really targets our legs and butt. So on Fridays, I spend more time doing cardio.

S/Su: Off

Often times I will swim for my cardio... and I go for a certain distance as opposed to a time.

Do not forget about stretching after you workout.

I would definitely not recommend doing all muscle groups each day. That is actually disadvantageous to what you're trying to accomplish.

I hope this helps!

I don't necessarily increase my calories, but I do make sure to drink more water and I usually have a protein shake.

Unless you actually do a body fat analysis, you are going to know if you are building muscle by taking your measurements.

This is what I usually do.

Sat - Lower body and abs
Sun - Upper body and cardio
Mon - Cardio
Tue - Lower body and cardio
Wed - Upper body and abs
Thu - Cardio
Friday - off

Hey Tony...

you sound like me several years ago...in a perfect world, you would just shift the fat to muscle..i've never really seens anyone that can do that (not on the scale of how we wanna loose.) 2 or  pounds.. sure..but our people wanna take 70 pounds of fat and convert to muscle....there is not enough fairy dust in the world ... grin..

when i wanted to loose..i hit the cardio... balls to the wall... about 70 min a day..and  iwas was in ketosis ...no carbs at all going in me..man that is tough..i was fanatical..i had to be...(sometimes the OCD comes in handy..)

I could never do proten shakes..i just nibbled on chicken breasts all the time... to get about 120 grams of protein..

Now.. you know..if you are in ketosis.. you can not put on muscle..i learned that about a year into my work out..i was doing some of the toning stuff..hitting the machines about like you are..

when i wanted to put on muscle..i would eat a banana...before.. maybe a banana in the middle...and slam the protein when i was done..

I still dump really bad..so i take my carbs before i go to bed, so i can sleep it off..enough to keep me out of ketosis..

now the great mystery if what am i losing..measurements, don;t help when we are measureing flab..

one guy wanted to use those pinchers to measure my skin...that was some pretty numbers..

there is a thing called a "bod pod"... a pressured room, that measures air displacement..but still.. when we have the flab...that takes up room too..

after my plastics.. i could use how my clothes fit to tell me how the transfer was going..if my shirt hung a little nicer through the shoulders..if my pants looked better on my back side..that sorts thing...

i'm just rambleing..hope i helped a little..i love to go to the gym..but i do have to put more fuel in my body..if i can help...let me know..

I have an issue with carbs... I can't stay away from them... i really try to keep them low, but it gets hard when I need stuff for energy....  do I basically need to go back on atkins to optimize my weight loss?   I really just want to tone.

Ok, here's my advice.

I'm currently in maintenance.  So any calories that I burn I also need to eat (burn 400 cal - eat 400 cal).

I have a daily goal of 1800 cal per day, not counting the cals from working out.  I most of the time get really close (a few times really going over, but not often).  If I goto the gym I also make sure that I plan for that during the day so that I'm not stuck with eating another 400-500 cals in the evening time.

I usually have a protein bar about 30 min before I goto the gym or workout.  Then after, I will have dinner (I generally exercise in the afternoon, after work).

The protein bar that I like is the Pure Protein bars.  They have decent stats, but be careful if are still wanting to lose weight as they do have about 17g of carbs.  I would recomend that you make these most of the carbs that you eat.

Now I eat about 180g of carbs per day.  I'm still losing but very slowly.

I hope that this helps.

Yep!  A lot of people don't understand that if you are not eating enough calories your body will not allow weight loss.  It does not know when it will get it's next source of food and will "hoard" anything that it does get.

If you are active, than you need to provide that fuel so that it knows that it will continue to get the fuel that it needs.  Only when you eat in excess and are not active is when it will store as fat.

Alot of people will ask me what I've done to lose weight, I always ask them if they are active and what they eat.  Most of the time they usually skip breakfast, and are not active.  I tell them to start getting active (go to the mall, for a walk anything) and make sure that they eat plenty of healthy food and NEVER skip breakfast and they start to lose weight.
