frustrated by the damn scale!
OK... i'm 4 wks & 3 days into my new life. yay! I have permanently released 45 lbs in total. big yay! 29 lbs of those were released post op. bigger yay! so here's where the frustration comes in.... i've only released 2 lbs in the past 2 wks. waaaaaaaaaaaah!
i hate this! i did realize that my carb count was a little too high on thurs when i went to my WLS support group. ok... now i'm afraid of food. what the hell do i eat? excersize has been challenging for me because i love my power walks. however i currently have plantar fascitis and whenever i walk my foot is in so much pain i can barely walk for two days because i'm in so much pain. So i'm buying a bike which will be ready on wed or thurs. I've unfortunately been waiting over 2 wks for it. but oh well... i'll have it in a few days.
OK... so i'm afraid of food, have no real idea what the hell i can eat that will work for me, and excersize is very challenging.
help! this sux big time! *sigh* ok... i can't just sit around being sad about this. i'm going for a power walk and get ready for the 2 days of foot pain and limping.

Here's some BIG advice ..........STOP CHECKING THE SCALE. No seriously. Read all of the posts about stalling and plateaus. It happens to everyone between 4-6 weeks typically, and it will happen every so often after that! Think about it. You are pretty much starving yourself at this point. So your body is basically telling you that it doesn't feel right dropping all this weight so fast - it's playing catch up. A plateau can be a couple days or a couple weeks.
Your nutritionist should be telling what to eat at this point. I suggest not eating something that is tough like steak, choose something that is easy to chew and swallow. Moist meats are key! No crackers, rice, etc ..that will probably hurt.

thx brooke. ya i was weighing myself daily for the first 3 wks post op. that was awesome because i saw the numbers going down daily. now i'm not. so i'm only weighing myself a couple of times a week. i'm trying to get my obsessive mind to only weigh myself once a week.
i am making better choices for food. last night i went out for dinner w/a couple of friends... sushi. i had 2.5 pieces of sashimi and i was good. today has been cottage cheese & chicken so far. hello?! non-fat cottage cheese is 14g of protein for every 1/2 cup?! woo hoo! i've never been a big beef eater, so i'm good to avoid steak altogether.
and there's a gym at my office with personal trainers. i think it's time i hire a trainer. ok... thanks!
anymore suggestions out there folks?

Fish Fish Fish - I can not believe that you can eat chicken!!! 6 months out and I still can not eat chicken. My rule when it comes to food is pretty much protein only and never more than 1/2 cup of anything, in the beginning it was 1/4 cup. It is only over the last few weeks that I have been able to move up to 1/2 cup, and then only soups etc. When it comes to fish, 2oz is my max. I can also eat pork if it is really tender, but this is a higher fat meat so you need to watch it. Smoked salmon is an excellent choice for me - it works well with some ff cream cheese. I also lived on re-fried beans mixed with sour cream for quite a while.
I know that stalling is frustrating but it will pass. I have had numerous plateaus, but normally lost a huge amount of weight when it ended. I plateaued at many of my bodies "remembered weights" (those weigths where we used to be for long periods of time) and when coming up to a number I wanted - for instance I stayed at 99 pounds lost for a while.... Now I have been at 110 down for almost a month. The good news is that we can plateau and not gain weight during those times. I think that maintaining is just as important as loosing. In the past, plateaus could be a diet breaker... now I look at it as just time for my skin to catch up :-)
I too suffered from PF - for years I was in huge pain. Make sure you are wearing good shoes, not only while walking but all the time!!! I loved putting on a nice pair of Vans or sandals but I knew that I was going to pay the price. The good news is that I am currently PF free. My feet do not hurt AT ALL and I can wear cute sexy sandals with NO PAIN. You will notice it slowly fading over the next couple of months but you need to take care of your feet in the process.
Stay away from the carbs! Up your protein! and you will be fine.
See you at the Oct Tues meeting.

Eat protein, whatever they are telling you at this point. Cottage cheese is my fall back food. Watch carbs (I mean avoid them...don't jus****ch them
Drink your water....and stay off the scale....stalls happen....it is the long run not the short run we are looking at. Also try to find something you can do...exercise wise. Bike is a great idea. But yoga, tai chi, any work out that doesn't hurt your foot.
Distract yourself from the scale and food...find something fun to do...this too will pass.

I'll be 4 weeks post op tomorrow, and I had a slight stall as well already. The good thing is, I know this is normal and it's going to happen many more times. At my support group meeting last week, we were all told that our bodies do need to catch up. We are losing weight at much more faster pace than we ever had. I was also told to not focus on the number on my scale, but to focus on how my clothes are fitting and how I'm feeling. I'm starting to regain my energy which is great cause I'm anxious to get on my treadmill....which will also help the pounds start falling again, and exercise helps you feel better too...
Good luck, and know that you aren't alone. We are all going through the same thing....and even though we know why we stall, it can still be frustrating. But it will pass....I wish you the best!

My surgery was Aug 26th so we're pretty close together. Congrats on 45 lost, that's amazing. I'm down 34 lbs and am very happy about it. I haven't hit a plateau yet but know it's coming. Right now my big challenge is getting in enough water, I just can't seem to choke it down any more.
As for the PF why don't you try stationary bicycling? Much easier on the feet.
If you average out your weight loss by number of days it's still FANTASTIC success.

Protein alllllll protein! Vitamins!
Liquids..they help the kidneys get rid of all the fat we have been toting around!
Stay off the scale, seriously..once a week maybe...the wgt. is not gonna come off any faster than it will..
there are plenty of RNY sites with diet suggestions. Google them. Or call the dietician at your surgeons office
About the PF ...forget the walks for now and do water aerobics and go to your local sports clinic for orthotics..you'll wonder why you didn't already.

OMG I can soooo relate to you.
Surgery was May 15th 2009
Have lost 50lbs...then 47lbs...then 48lbs... then 50lbs.
I made some modifications to my diet
1) Added more lean protein (mostly fish and low fat cottage cheese for me)
2) Ate more green veggies
3) Water Water Water - it sux but get those 8 glasses a day! (Crystal Light)
4) Get active! I worked out more consistenly (something I wasnt doing) and I tried something different and fun to be active. I went bowling with friends, I did water aerobics, etc)
It's worked! I've noticed now I am closer to the 50lbs to 51lbs range.
You can do it! It took a month for my body/my brain/etc to get the kick start again.
Invest in you, you are worth it! :o)

great news everyone... that plateau is officially behind me! woo hoo! my body is back in the weight releasing game! yippeeeeeee! I have released another 3.2 lbs and i'm feeling better. i literally can feel my body changing. that's kinda wild! I have been making better choices about my food (a lot less carbs and more protein.) I bought a bike this past week and I rode it 5.7 miles on sat and 7 miles on sunday. omg! the whole time i was like "i'm earning that 5th butterfly!" which means: i'm getting my next tattoos this coming saturday (I already have 9) and this will be a series of butterflies (hugely symbolic of my transformation). They will start at the top of my right foot and be flying up and around my ankle to the mid section of my calf. I'm getting 1 butterfly for every 10 lbs that i release. Since i have now released 48.2 lbs and I'm still 5 days away from getting my tattoos, i'm sure i can release another 1.8 lbs at the very least!
So thank you everyone for your encouraging words. Yay! Here's to my 5th butterfly! Oh btw... when I got on the scale this morning and found that i'm in the 250's I cried! I haven't been in the 250's in yeeeeeeeeears! yay me! I'm so grateful for this journey.
Have a great day everyone!
