Thanks for this post!  Due to my iron levels having been consistantly good, I don't supplement with iron (not unusual for men).  Knowing that my Bariatric Advantage multivitamins don't have any iron in them I need to make sure I'm getting enough meat every day to keep the iron levels healthy.  Nice to know there are some other options.

And who knew shrimp were a good source of iron?  Yay!

Thanks for posting that.  I am almost always anemic and one of the things I have to work on before surgery is to get my iron levels up.  I find it interesting that everyone tells you that spinach has iron in it, but it's actually and iron inhibitor.

hey handsome..thanks for the post.  Iron and I just haven't gotten along..  My nutritionist wants me to take an iron supplement...that is very expensive due to the lack of iron in my system.  Extremely anemic...  They don't want to to an iron infusion, but that is where I am heading...  Hope things work out for you....

Hi Russ,

Have you tried carbonyl iron supplements?  You can usually find them in drug stores under the name "Feosol Caplets" (not Feosol Tablets, which are ferrous sulfate and tough on your gut).  They're also sold under drug-store generic brands; I use the one sold by CVS.  Carbonyl iron is a powder of pure metallic iron microparticles, not an iron salt, so it's much gentler on your stomach.  Vitalady sells carbonyl iron on her website as "Tender Iron".

Of course, calcium supplements will block absorption of iron when they're taken at the same time.  Vitamin C (tablets or orange juice) on the other hand increases the absorption of iron

Here's another possibilty worth investigating: I'd been mildly anemic (low Hgb and Hct) since my surgery (even before WLS I was always on the lower limit of normal.)  After surgery, I was swallowing large amounts of iron without any material effect.  Turns out my testosterone was low!  I started on a testosterone gel 6 weeks ago, and my numbers are a LOT better.  No more anemia, to say nothing about its effect on my sex drive!

With guns like you have, I have no doubt that your T is at 1000!
