Is anyone from Macon, GA?
We have a (maybe) possibility of a job in Macon. I was wondering if anyone from that area could tell me what life is like there as a gay person. If this job comes through, it will be a fairly high profile position so I don't want to see us put into a position where out house and cars are egged or worse. Hawaii is so incredibly accepting, but so expensive to live here so we are having to look at options.
I appreciate any guidance you can give.
Aloha,
Barb
PS - Also wondering about doctors in that area who could do my follow up stuff.

Hi...I am originally from Columbus, GA...which is not far from Macon...hmmm...let's see what I can tell you about being gay in GA.....was not a good thing 10 years ago...it was not a very progressive or accepting state when it came to gays/lesbians or basically any kind of relationship that would be considered out of the norm (ex. bi-racial...etc)
I think that one of the only places in GA that one could be openly gay without repercussions is in Atlanta...and notice that I didn't say safe....I think that that is a totally different problem...I don't feel safe enough there with all of the bigotry and hate to be open about being gay...I moved away from there in order to be who I am today...and lead the openly gay life that I live...
Now I know that things may have changed in the last 10 years and I know there MUST be some happy gay people that do live in GA...but my experience was not good...and I grew up there my entire life...when I go home now to visit I notice that the gay bars are still "underground"...no name listed on the outside of the bar...things like that...there are definitely still some of the same problems going on there...
Good luck with your decision...If I was you guys I would check into New England...we can get legally married in just about every state up here...people are soooo very accepting...we always feel safe and it's a great place to be if you are gay!

Aloha Cherrylyn,
Well, you confirmed what we were afraid of. New England is definitely a better choice but there aren't many jobs in her field, so we've been looking wherever we've found something. But this one popped up so I'm sure something else more palatable will too in a place where we won't worry about being persecuted.
Thanks so much for your information!

Hello my name is Kerri and I live in macon. I am not gay but wanted to tell you about macon ga, There are a lot of gay people that live here and as far as being persecuted over your choice of lifestyles is not going to happen. Everyone here seems to accept others being gay. I hope this helps. Hope you find what you are looking for.
