One week after surgery
Hi Everyone...Amand here...I hade my surgery on 6/15/09....just 1 week ago. Have lost 5 1/2 lbs this week and 20 1/2 overall(this is including the pre-op liquid diet for 8 days). Doing better everyday but I am getting an infected surgical incision. I see the nurse practioner in 2 days. I am having a little difficulty getting in 70 grams of protein daily. I cannot stand the protein powder in most things although I can make a Carbmaster yogurt/milk and 1/2 scoop powder smoothy and tolerate that. And what about the calcium....any suggestions out there. I knew I would have to do all this and I am actually quite surprised I am having any problems. Ususally I am the king of woman that does what is necessary....but my appetite just doesn't allow it now. I think of taking meds and almost get ill. Looking forward to the pureed part, I think...any little change is good, right?
Anyway, if anyone has some helpful ideas for me, please share. I have a wonderful girlfriend and she is SO EXTREMELY SUPPORTIVE!! I have no excure not to succeed.
Thanks!
Amanda

Hey Amanda!
My surgery was May 15th and I had some similar issues. Protein made me feel like crap most of the time because I was really hurting. My practioner told me not to concentrate so much on a fixed number of protein because she said with the swelling from surgery that I probably couldnt finish a whole one anyway. Instead, she told me to be sure I stayed hydrated. I cut the protein shakes down to 2 a day and had a bottle of G2 (lower sugar, calorie gatorade) with me at all times and began to feel so much better.
I'm down 32 lbs since surgery!
Around my port I noticed it was very swollen around it, the color was purple and nasty looking. I thought it was infected too, It wasnt infected, it was just swollen from the surgery. It slowly began to get back to a normal color. If you are going in, def have them check it though. Hopefully you are just worrying about things for no reason, like I did.
I have a high level of anixiety most of the time, lol. Working on that everyday too.
Welcome to the journey of WLS! Your seatbelt is fastened, now sit back and enjoy!

Heya Amanda!!
Welcome :-)
ok so Carmaster yogurt is a god send!!!
I take a half of a cup to a cup of Kashi go Lean (aka Kashi Go Poop) and mix it in. That will give you about 25 grams of protien in one sitting.
A co worker of mine came up with a great recipe... take some milk, add some kashi go poop, a scoop of protien and a small splash of almond extract and bam... almost like bread pudding. (let it sit for a good while to get it mushy)
Kroger also has Acitve Lifestyle Oatmeal (for weight control) Low sugar and 8 grams of protien! I use that when I want a snack. Good stuff!!!
Refried beans can be your friend (good protien)
Tuna is good (but only if you can handle the dryness... I add some mustard to it)
I HATE protien shakes... loathe them... so I get a good 70 grams of protien in just food alone by lunchtime. (my yogurt, kashi, and tuna)
Good luck!!!
Keep the questions coming... we shouldn't have to go through this journey alone :)

I love my protien shake. It is by BSN and is called DESSERT. I get the whipped vanilla and the chocolate fudge pudding flavors. Then I make three shakes at a time using two vanilla and one chocolate. Then I just drink 8 oz for breakfast, and one for a bedtime snack. Each 8 oz is 20 oz of protien for me because I make it with 1% milk instead of water. I think the milk gives it an added flavor tha****er doesn't. The other thing I lived on for the first month or two was cottage cheese. I got the low fat cottage cheese and just ate a little for snacks, lunch, dinner...whatever. It really helped me!
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!
