I knew there HAD to be a GLBT forum
So happy to see the "FAMILY" on here!! I was searching and searching and there you all were! Looking great, I might add! My surgery date is looking to be around the first or second week of July. I am soooo excited. How did you all do and can you offer any advice or tips on how to get through it and maintain? Good Lord, I'm scared I won't be successful.
WELCOME! Glad you found us. Don't know where in PA you are but I am right outside of Philadelphia - In Drexel Hill.
Don't know if I can offer you much in terms of sage advice but OH and the GLBT forum has sure been helpful to me so far. I am 5 weeks out from surgery and feeling good. Have lost 55 lbs so far, about 20 lost preop.( Quit smoking AND quit drinking....) and 35 since the surg. Things that have been helpful to me:
- Challenging my thinking - For instance, instead of obsessing about what I can not eat- I try to re frame it into " what I choose to eat..."
- Resist the urge to treat this as a diet (which means failure) instead I think of the surgery as a "tool" to create a new lifestyle.
- If I have setbacks, I try to be gentle on myself and remember ' They did surgery on my stomach, not my head" I make the NEXT right choice and move on.
- Trying to get addicted to exercise - not successful yet, but trying. Right now I am however addicted to Sugar Free Popsicles! (Make sure you have stock for post surg!)
It is a very exciting time, I applaud you for making a decision to change and I am wishing you all the best.

Good to meet you, Jill. And congratulations on the date. This can be both an overwhelmingly exciting and terrifying time for all of us. But be sure to cherish every moment.
We're a good group here. Supportive, funny, take things seriously when we need to, and cut up when it's appropriate. It is my favorite board here. I only pop in every so often, although I still manage to lurk regularly. Life is just so busy right now.
I'm almost two and a half years out from surgery. Believe me, I understand the fears. Soon, you will understand the joys. Don't get me wrong, it's not all ****s and giggles. You will have times of pain. You will have times of frustration. You may even have times of depression. These are all normal. That's why we're here.
I would say that I have been fairly successful at both losing and maintenance. My high weight was 380, with a 50 inch waist and wearing size 4XL shirts. Today, I'm 140 pounds, wear size 26 pants and S-M shirts. My way of losing and maintaining is unique and focuses more on mentally restructuring myself than just the physical aspects. You'll hear a lot of suggestions here on how you should lose, how you should maintain, and how you should live. But in the end, just try and see what works for you.
This is my before and after (although I was already fourty down from my highest.)
Just remember to follow the rules, don't beat yourself up too much for little breaks (we all cheat at some time or another) and always remember the reasons you chose to do this. Then there will be nothing to fear; you will be a success.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi and welcome!
I was always afraid that I would be one of the ones the surgery didn't work for. I wouldn't lose the weight etc. I have a friend that told me, you WILL lose the weight. You will lose it just based on the fact you are having surgery. It's up to you to lose as best you can and keep it off.
I have lost 190 from my high (as of yesterday) My low was 187 and that is 200 down from my high.I have maintained this weight for about 6 months now. Keep in mind I am only 17 months out.
The best tip I can give is don't get hung up on the food too much. Yeah I miss eating fried chicken, but I don't miss the size 4X men's pants I wore at my high. You WILL mess up at some point. We are all human and make mistakes. Just don't beat yourself up over it and slip into old habits.
Good luck to you are we are always here for help, advice, and support.

Hi there and welcome! You'll do fine...just make sure you educate yourself on the dos and don'ts. Your doctor should provide a kind of handbook or packet of information with what kinds of foods to buy, vitamins you'll need and when to take them, protein information, excercise, as well as emergency care information. Also, most doctors have support groups...some find these helpful...if you're shy in person like me - they're okay...but I like to come here and get support. The people in this forum are the best...supportive, but they don't give you a bunch of bs. If you're doing the wrong things and complaining about your results...we tell you how it is...lol.
As for my progress...see pictures below...surgery was November 25, 2008. I'm so excited with my results thus far.
