Lactose Intolerance?

Ok, I've heard that a lot of people have a hard time with milk after surgery. I was drinking milk a few days ago and it was going down fine. I started drinking a little more over the last couple of days and all of a sudden last night I was running to the restroom every 20 minutes and my digestive system felt like it was on fire.

I talked to my surgical nurse yesterday before all this happened and she said that I may have gotten a bad smoothie from Smoothie King. Very likely, but the next day I still felt bad and the only thing I can think of is that it was all the milk I was drinking. Switching to soy is no problem. I love soy milk too. I just was craving milk.

Any thoughts from my wonderful and knowledeable veterans?

I know when I was in the hospital my gut was being ripped apart from the milk. I had to switch to soy there. They even used lactaid for us and I couldn't handle it. Not sure about it happening after you are a few weeks out.

I've been told that you can become lactose intolerant some time AFTER the surgery...it doesn't happen immediately, and may follow weeks or even months after.

So far I've had no issues with it, though the only dairy I eat anymore is yogurt and cheese.

I use to drink whole milk or 2% ...now I can only drink 1% or I feel really yucky. My NUT recommends the Simply Smart milk if you feel yucky. She claims the 2% tastes like whole.

I still cannot drink milk.  I have tried skim and even soy milk makes me hurl.  I don't know if it is the texture or what, but I cannot drink it.   You can mix your protein powder with flavored water.  It's better than nothing.
