Help, I'm stuck!

I met with my surgeon, Dr. Baggs @ Richmond Kaiser last week, and I have 12 more pounds to lose before my surgery can be scheduled.

I've been following their 1200 cal food plan to the tee!  I've also been keeping up with exercising from 20-40 minutes/day (which is a whole lot of exercise for me), but for the past 2 weeks, the scale hasn't budged.

Somebody tell me if this is normal or not.

So that's started my thinking along these lines...what if I go through with the RNY and I still don't lose weight????  Will this be a really huge mistake?  or maybe that's just my fear of having surgery coming out?

We all have gone through these thoughts and fears.  I am a kaiser ssf person and was told to lose 15lbs before surgery and I felt the forever its not going to happen fear.

Sometimes the scales don't move for a while and then suddenly it slowly begins again!  Maybe rotate your exercise around!

As for the rny not working, read this board and the rny board and you will see what a great weightloss tool you will be blessed to have!

Good luck to you!

Okay...let's do this together...breath in your nose and out your mouth...in your nose and out your mouth...ah...now let's evaluate this whole thing.  First, everyone goes through little plateaus as we lose weight...even after surgery...but not to worry, your body is just trying to figure out what's going on and making adjustments.  Continue your exercise, but I would suggest changing your routine some...our bodies become conditioned to routine exercise and we begin to lose the benefits because we continue to use the same muscles over and over.  If you're on the treadmill adjust the incline and the speed a little and extend your time.  If you're on the stationary bike add resistance...too often people just get on and peddle.  Get on the floor....okay, breath again...you will be able to get back up...but get down there and start doing some stretches, crunches, etc.   If the floor is too uncomfortable, use the body ball...you can do crunches, leg lifts (one at a time....no two legged leg lifts!!), work with the medicine ball, etc.  All of this will help use other muscles and get your body moving again.

Now about surgery, we each have to make the choice, but in making tyour decision think about your life as it is.  Think about the things you say "oh, I'd like to do that," but then you don't because your weight is a factor.  You can't help but lose weight with RNY, but again, it is a tool...and one you have to use wisely.  If you follow your doctor's instructions, the nutritionists guidelines, and do your exercises, you will be amazed at your weight loss.  I think all of us have gone through the same thinking....I had my last double thoughts five minutes before going into pre-op, but then I remembered all those things I wanted to do and knew it was the right thing for me.  Now I'm doing all those things and I'm thinking up more...I'm looking to take hip-hop dance classes.  As Don (Thespen) has written before, RNY was a gift I gave myself....and I thank God everyday for giving me the courage to unwrap that gift.

Hi Nadine,

Dr. Baggs is my doctor too. Don't you just adore him? :)

I had my surgery seven months ago. I have lost a total of 112 pounds, am at my goal of 125 pounds and staying there.

I too had my doubts. It would work for everyone but me. Believe me... it works. And with the way you are doing preop, you will do fantastic. Preop behavior is a good indicator of how successful you will be.

Your plateau is very normal. Just keep doing what you are doing. I had plateaus all along the way and you just have to get used to them. Do NOT give up. You are doing really well.

Are you able to go to the support groups? I haven't been able to for this month because of work issues but will after June. Maybe I'll see you there.

Keep you the good work... you are an incredible shrinking woman. *g*

The all dreaded STALL from H E DBLE HOCKEY STICKS. I know they SUCK but, there not a bad thing as frustrating as they seam when you're in the middle of one dont panic eventually as your body gets itself back into balance then you will start to loose again. If you're eating properly and you're working out,, you will loose weight.. Dont freak out... Keep in mind that it will happen again and again and again.

Yes, Dr. Baggs is awesome!    he actually removed my gall bladder a couple of years ago

...and yes, you are all right!  As I was reading all of your comments it occured to me that this is about the time in every diet I've ever been on when I just say f@#$k it and I'll lose weight some other time.

Thank you all for your encouragement.

I can't give up now, I'm so tired of being fat.

Raven, I've gone to the past couple of support groups.  I plan to keep going.  Don't want to sound hokey, but the post-op folks there are really inspirational.  Would be great to meet you.

...and yes, I've been trying the deep breaths!  They help too!  One of the things I excel at is panic and anxiety.
