New York City's Fast-Food Calorie Labeling Rule
Hi Guys,
I spent a three day birthday weekend in NYC this past weekend. If you are a Facebook pal, you probably were annoyed with my tourist post. I just had to do it! Hehehe. We had a great time, stayed out late and ate and drank too much (Well, as much as the band let me). And, happy that this morning I only weighed a pound more and I suspect it will go away fast given the salty food I ate yesterday.
I was very impressed with the NYC law that had fast food and takeout locations posting calories on items. I first saw it when we walked into Sbarro late night after attending a play (Dolly’s 9 to 5 rocked!) to find a little hot snack. Brett was set on pizza. After he saw the 770 calories for a single slice of cheese pizza he changed his mind. We ended up having a meatball each and splitting a1/2 chicken piccata breast for a lot less calories… and we let food on our plates. At breakfast I looked at McDonald’s breakfasts and they were so unhealthy. We knew we were just getting the big breakfasts, eating the egg and some sausage and tossing the biscuits.
I love Starbucks and seeing those calories really made me think. I had skinny frappachinos and they were 140 calories as opposed to 440 calories in the regular. I knew Sawbucks coffees and drinks is just laden with hidden calories.
I would love to see this law in Ohio. It so encourages healthy eating. It is great in tracking your calorie intake. That visual reminder just keeps your goal in your mind and prevents you from making an error. Sometimes, you make these fast food choices and think you are doing well only to be surprised that you made a horrible choice.
Does anywhere else have this type of food labeling law? I am just curious. I am going to email my legislators about it for sure.
Tom PS: Here is some infor about the law: http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2009/03/09/prsb0309.htm
