I am hoping to lose fifty pounds through the gastric bypass surgery.  I am 5'5 and 211 lbs.  I am 33 years old.  What should I expect regarding sagging/excess skin?  Hopefully, I won't have any??  Help!?

You want to lose JUST 50 pounds???

I don't think you'll have much, if any, excess skin with just a 50 pound weight loss.

"You want to lose JUST 50 pounds???"

No. Just curious. My surgeon wouldn't do surgery for someone who just wanted to lose 50 pounds. My center offers a non-surgical program and for people who want to lose a little that is where they suggest they go.

There are two recent threads posted about excess skin... try looking at them for answers.

50 pounds?????? what????? I dont think my surgeon would have touched me for 50 pounds. I really dont think my insr company would have approved it for 50 pounds..... I dont think you'll have all the skin the rest of us have. But, 50 pounds?? I dont mean to sound shocked but in here when the average goal is a 100 pounds or better,,,50 pounds?? I did that on the 6 mo sprvsd diet.  I think maybe my left leg weighed 50 pounds.

LOL. Okay....is 60 pounds better? I have a diseased liver, diabetes, high blood pressure, and acid reflux, and due to my BMI, I shouldn't have trouble getting insurance to cover the procedure. I have lost 11 pounds since 4/17, but keeping the weight off will be the difficult part. Thanks for responding.

ahhhhh....the dreaded comorbities.  If losing 50 pounds......I don't think you will have much trouble with skin issues.  Are they doing RNY or the lap band?  I'm really hoping lap band because the RNY could be a bit dangerous for you.

Sheesh, I'm only 5'9" and my doctor told me to expect to get down to your weight.

You're a young guy and at only 211, you probably haven't stretched the skin that much.  You should have less of a problem than a lot of us.  My highest weight was 380 and with 235 pounds lost, I really don't have a large problem with loose skin.  I seem to have the "snap back" gene from my mother's side (she's 62 but looks more like 40.)  That's one good thing about being Asian.

And, although the choice is yours and I trust you'll do all the necessary research, for a fifty or even 60 pound weight loss, the lap band may be more your thing.  Especially in the beginning, you will lose a lot of weight with RNY whether you want to or not, and there is a possibility that you may lose too much weight before your body adjusts.  They say that being underweight is just as dangerous, or even more dangerous, than being overweight.  So be sure to examine all options closely.

Cheers,

Chris
