Does anybody knows the conditions when a doctor decides to convert a lap to an open surgery?

It's more than likely due to the surgeon feeling complications may arise from the laproscopic procedure.  If I had to guess it would probably be due to the limitations of the laproscopic tools themselves.  But this is just a guess, you can ask the surgeon to justify his decision.  For him to change your surgery from one type to another you should have had to redo your informed consent since the original terms of consent have changed.  Call him on Monday.

I didn't see you were from Brazil... the rules of informed consent might be different there or they might not exist at all.  Good luck!

From my understanding it often has to do with the size of the liver. If the liver is too large then they may have to do an open procedure. The Liver sort of lays across the top of the stomach and they have to use a tool to move it aside. The reason most docs request a liquid diet prior to surgery is because it shrinks the liver so the laprascopic tools have room to work.

The other reason is other prior abdominal surgeries and scar tissue build up.

Good luck on your surgery!! Mine too is right around the corner (May 6th)

Hi there!  I agree with Huski papi.  I was told that the tools need to be able to lift and hold the liver up or else they need to open you up.  I know this is easier said than done, but I was a scared baby and it turned to be all for nothing.  The surgery was quick and amazing.  let them know that you want relaxing medicine as soon as you get there, and the next thing you know you are being brought to your room!  Good luck to you!
