Clueless ER docs

For the last week I have been having pain in my upper right area. I called the Dr Thursday after it felt like someone was stabbing in right under my ribs. Dr out of town till Monday, was told to go to the ER could be gallbladder. Went to ER told them about pain and RNY. They do a CT scan. After 9 hours there I'm told no stone gallbladder is good. " You have a stomach ache." Call the DR office fridaythey say still could be gallbladder, if its bad go back to ER. Saturday night I get pains so bad along with the nausea, vomiting and diarrhea I have had for days now. The pain are in the same spot right side right under ribs. After waiting 2 hours they do a xray. Then tell me " distention of multiple segments of small bowel consistent with obstruction". Time for another CT scan. Two large cups mixed with 7UP are given to me, I tell them I can not drink 7UP, "you have to". So they bring it back made with water. I drink half of one. Have CT no obstruction. ER Dr tells me to eat and drink apple juice, Gatorade, jello and flat soda. Again I tell them no soda and no sugar. I'm told no sugar free items only real sugar. So here I am still having stabbing pains in same spot. Very thing gives me nausea even water. I will call bypass Dr in the morning. Can you have gallbladder pain without stones? Thanks for telling me rant.

I had my gallbladder removed 5 yrs ago. I had WICKED bad pains and went to the ER 3 times for pain relief. I had only ONE stone that they didn't see until doing an ultrasound the 2nd time around.  I was still doubled over in pains. Anything I ate I was in pain.

I hope you get answers soon!

In defense of the ER staff, gastric bypass patients are not at all common.  Unless they have had specific experiences with WLS patients they won't know about the no sugar, no pop, etc. rules.

And you most certainly can have gallbladder pain without stones.  It's called cholecystitis or inflammation of the gallbladder.  Usually when anyone is complaining of severe constant right upper abdominal pain the gallbladder is the first suspect.

It might not be the gall bladder. I know they found my gall bladder problem with a CT scan. It was distended and it picked up on that. Didn't see any stones but a wacked out gall bladder none the less.
