Baby aspirin
I went to have my IVC filter removed yesterday, it should have taken 15 minutes to remove. I was on the table for over 2 hours. My filter was stuck. He worked and worked they even called the company that made my filter for any suggestion and no luck. This time they did give me more drugs. I thought I had only been i nthere about 20 minutes until I saw the clock. Once he started having trouble I think they pushed some more drugs which I am very glad they did, I was starting to get worried hearing them talk about not be able to get it and if they tried this, but then this might happen and that would not be good. He told before he started that I would be a lot happier with it out. Then after he got it out he said you should have no real problems. He said if my legs start to swell then I have a blood clot in the filter will stop it, but that the swelling in my legs would never go down. He also told me to take a baby aspirin once a day. I know I am not to have aspirin and I voiced that to him, he said he would think a baby aspirin would be OK. (This was not by surgeon.) Can we have a baby aspirin after GBS? Just a little frustrated, my one the nurse made it sound like if it had come out sooner after my surgery it might not have been a problem.
Sorry this was so long.

Jeff, not sure what it was you had out. I try to stay away from aspirin because it can upset your pouch but you need to hear from both your WLS doc and your primary doc to decide what to do for you. I had surface blood clots after my IV trauma and I was able to deal with them with tylenol.
I know there is one gal in my support group who is on aspirin, even though it is bad for the pouch, they say the heart and the brain rule over the pouch, so if you need to be on it your doctor should let you know. I think you are supposed to take with food and there might be some other hints out there from some of the board members who are medically trained.
Hopefully the medical stuff will get over before too long and you can get on with living your new life!

Well, I'm glad you got through that okay! Can't say I know the trauma of wearing a filter and having it removed, but I've heard that it is a very uncomfortable experience.
First thing I would do is check with my surgeon to see if the other doctor's/nurse's suggestion to take a baby aspirin is okay. What the surgeon says does go. I would think that preventing a blood clot would be more important than preventing an ulcer, but who the hell am I? Don't listen to me. I just woke up and haven't had my coffee yet. Call your surgeon.

Their telling you to do that as a blood thinner I would assume.. We'll I was told even with the Lap Band that was a big NO.. So I dont know what to say about that... Maybe you're doctors need to talk to one another to decide if that is okay for you. Baby Aspirin might be a small enough dose but, in time if you take it everyday that might build up.. I would call the WLS surgeon and ask.. I dont know if I would even start that until you do.. There might be a medication that would be safer for you to use.
I think it all depends on the risk of taking the aspirin vs. not taking aspirin.
For me, I have heart disease and it is riskier for me to not take aspirin. My surgeon was aware of this before my RNY and we discussed how to handle it. If your Drs. decide that it is worth the risk for you to take aspirin, #1 get chewable, #2 don't take on an empty stomach. Also, if you take it with other supplements like I do, mix up the order so the aspirin is not falling in the same place all the time.
Your Drs. may have different recommendations for you, but this is what I do. Whatever you do, please speak with your surgeon on how to best treat your pouch.

It depends on why you had the IVC filter to begin with. I could assume pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis but I might be wrong. You need to talk to your surgeon and see what is recommended. Your clots might have been caused by decreased mobiliity but it's hard to say. If asprin and like drugs such as Plavix are a no no then call your surgeon for advice.
