A question about blood sugar.

Last night something freakish happened!

I woke up at 12:30 to find that I was covered in sweat, twitching uncontrollably, and I was craving something with sugar BAD. I scarfed down half a bag of grapes. I couldn't stop myself. Put it this way I was eating so fast the grapes were squirting all over the place and my shirt was soaked. (I have not eaten that fast since before surgery)

After eating, the twitching and sweats stopped. I got REALLY tired and went back to bed. I mentioned this to my partner (who's father is a diabetic) and she said it's my blood sugar. I've never had anything like this happen before.

I have one of his old meters and plan to check next time. I know I need to call my PCP but he's so hard to get into so I was hoping that someone else has experienced this. I'm waiting on my Mom to call me (she's a nurse) tonight and I'll see what she says as well.

Being a diabetic as well, sounds like something to do with your blood sugar.  I've never had a low episode that made me want to eat something sweet, that usually happens when my sugars are high.  However the waking drenched in sweat and twitching could be either high or low.  The falling asleep after downing so much natural sugar with grapes was either you going from low to higher due to the sugar content (it can be draining) or you going from high to high.  you need to test regularly at many different intervals to see how your body is reacting throughout the day.  Without checking no one will be able to say that you were one way or the other because the signs and symptoms are too similar for each.  You just have to be careful with it......don't get stuck on a roller coaster as that will tire you even more!  Everyone can have a low or high episode here or there, but if this becomes a more regular thing  you HAVE to get it checked out.  In fact, I wouldn't wait for it to be more regular thing.

I hope this helps.....

Think about checking with your Mom about the meter you intend to use.
You may need new strips. They go out of date.

Some RNYers get Reactive Hypoglycemia post-op.  I do.  You need to be careful.  Low blood sugars can be very dangerous.  The recommendation is to eat a small high protein/complex carb meal every 2-3 hours and stay away from refined flour and sugar (the white stuff).

I think Sharyn hit the nail on the head. I suffer from sinilar and the frequent meal thing works for me. Still a good idea to check w/ your PCP or you WLS doc.

That must have been so scary for you. I'm so sorry this happened. I think the advice you've gotten thus far is sound. Get new strips and start checking your BS frequently. And clue in your doctor so this can all be documented. And you may want to keep a package of crackers by your bed... just a couple of soda crackers can bring you out of a blood sugar drop without having to resort to sugar. At least until you can get up and get a little protein.

And yeah, listen to your mom.

I'm glad you are ok. Have you heard from any of the resources (Mom, PCP, Etc)? If so what did they say?

I wake up covered in sweat often, but never the need to eat...
