I don't think they are common after WLS, no. I think they are genetic. You only hear about a certain amt of ppl getting them so I hope you get them taken care of soon!!!! I hear they can hurt really badly!

My understanding is that the risk is higher for stones post WLS - - related to the high intake of supplements like calcium and so on, and the concurrent higher risk of dehydration.  Very important for all of us to keep sipping and keep hydrated.  If they've been discovered in you within a month of surgery you may well have had them brewing for some time though.  Best to you,

Mike

SADLY, I am an expert on this issue...  Kidney stones to have genetic ties...however, after WLS, they are extremely common. (sorry to contridict anybody who says different).  With the amount of calcium that we add to our diets (due to supplements) the chance of developing stones increases.  That is why water is vital!!!!  Also, beware of what you take to sooth an upset stomach.  Although TUMS are wonderful, they are harmful...because they are calcium laden.

As I said, past experiences...before and after surgery have made me quite knowledgible about this topic...

Oh no!  Don't tell me that. I have had kidney stones twice in the past. They are so painful. I have never heard this. I have heard that gall stones are a remote possibility. My surgeon had me on an Rx to prevent them during the first 3 months I was post-op. He told me that after that the possibility is very rare.

Back to kidney stones.. A urologist told me that every time you have them you double the chance that you will have them again. It's been 16 years since my last one. Let's hope they are gone for me.

Well let me chime in as the expert on this topic.  I have passed over 30 kidney stones.  I am a producer.  I just passed my first one since wls, and it was freaking huge.  (this is why I have not been so active on the board.  Loaded on Percocet) Before, they were smaller.  I have had surgery to remove two, had one blasted ultrasonically, and have had stints.  I knew going into surgery that it was a serious risk for me, but being as i make a stone every month to month and half I figured I would rather be thin and in pain instead of fat and in pain.  Also dont fool yourself into thinking these are old stones.  I had 4 removed surgically from both kidneys and had another one 30 days later.   From completely clear to in the ER writhing in pain.  I am very cautious with my calcium supps as a result.  I am not recommending that for anyone, but I have managed to only have one and I am three months out.  I am praying that losing weight will help with a more permanant solution for me!  Feel free to private message me if you need any tips, trick or passing info.  Make sure your Urologist prescribes you FLOMAX.  It dialates your ureter so you can pass the stone with less pain!  Alot of docs only treat the pain.   Lemon in your water helps raise the acidity of your urine and in not conducive to forming stones as well.   Just a couple tips!

Hi. I am 5 weeks out from RNY and just got home from the hospital battling kidney stones and dehydration.  This was so incredibly painful and it absolutely is COMMON after weight loss surgery.  I was told my stones could have been there for awhile, but came into play when I became dehydrated, so like the others have said,  please drink, drink, drink all of your liquids and then some. The nurse told me today that SF lemonade could actually help with them, so as the other person said, lemon does help in not forming them.  I was given Flomax as well, and within 36 hours had passed 5 of them, however, I still had to go back to the ER and spend 2 nights there for dehydration. I had not heard about calcium being the culprit, but I plan on looking into that a little bit more. I never want to have to deal with them again. Good luck to you!!!
