Ok for the second time since surgery I am having raging pms.  Emotional, and CARB cravings like I cannot even explain.  Pre surgery, never any pms.  Ever.  I would wake up and go, oh, its time for my period..and then go on.  Now.  I am morphing into someone I do not know.  Anyone else deal with this???  I want chocolate cake so bad i can taste it.  Oh and salty potato chips.  ARGH!!!!  I settled for some All Bran cereal.  Not the same.  Just sayin.

I get them like that but when I was heavy I rarely got a period - maybe 2-3 times a year. Now I get them every month and everything involved feels 10 times worse!!! UGH!

About every two months I get this same feeling.   Very overwhelming so now that I am aware of it I try to keep myself totally busy or else I really want the damn cake.  And this time of year I know that I will be craving the easter candy!!!   LOL can't blame it on a monthly friend as I haven't had one in a few years!  Hang in there!

Here's the lowdown... body fat produces estrogen (as well as your ovaries and pituitary)... who knew? As you are losing body fat, you are losing estrogen production so it's kicking your ovaries into high gear to maintain the status quo. I don't know how old you are but I'm assuming you are not perimenopausal. The PMS is coming from the increase in ovarian production of estrogen.

However, perimenopause is starting earlier and earlier for women these days, especially if you eat red meat or use animal products from animals shot with hormones. Anyway, it is possible that what you are experiencing is the beginnings of perimenopause which is similar to PMS only from HELL!

A third contributor could be an increase in soy foods if you are doing that. Soy acts as an estrogen precursor. Used to be that women ate lots of soy to counteract the effects of menopause by keeping their estrogen levels increased. This is fine if your ovaries are shut down and producing no more but not good if your ovaries are still kicking which yours obviously are.

Solutions either way that have helped me and others is getting on a low dose of progesterone. This suppresses some of the estrogen effect, regulates your periods (sometime eliminates them completely) and significantly helps with the cravings and the mood swings. Some doctors will tell you that it will also increase your appetite but this is ONLY in very high doses. I was on progestin the entire time I was losing. Of course, if you are wanting to get pregnant, this won't work for you.

For me, I had one period after my surgery (3 days after) and then none since. Bariatric surgery has also been known to kick women into menopause if they are on the edge which I was. I'm pretty thrilled. I do get mild hot flashes but since I'm cold all the time, it's rather welcomed.

Talk to your GYN about it. Usually 10-20 mg per day is enough if this interests you. I was taking the brand name Megestrol, 20 mg a day.

I am only 35 so I dont think i am hitting perimenipause, but.  I had severe PCOS prior to surgery, therefore high testosterone and low estrogen. I am wondering if perhaps with the weightloss that is reversing and I am getting a lower testosterone and higher estrogen and my body is going SAY WHAT???????

That very well could be. I'd say maybe get with your GYN and share this info and even get your hormone levels tested. There is no reason to suffer. We have the technology.

Girl, I am the same way. All I want are carbs (donuts, chocolate cake, chocolate, etc.) and salt (ok that might have to do with the BP too) Not too emotional but damn cramps kill me. I had them last night and cried about it all night cause I usually don't have them.

I shall now be know as Hagatha: Queen of the queens.

Honey... men have estrogen too and those with more body fat have more of it. So as you are losing your fat, you are losing estrogen production and that is going to toss all your hormones into a tizzy. Men and women have the SAME hormones but in different amounts. Building muscle increases progesterone and testosterone production in the same way that testosterone helps with muscle mass. Estrogen overwhelmes proesterone and testosterone and that is another reason losing weight makes it easier to build muscle.

So do you know how to make a hormone?
