Just wondering about a couple things..

Well, today I was bored, so I was looking at profiles here on OH. It really does surprise me of the difference we all go through in our process. Some people it has taken over a year to get from their first appointment with their surgeon, to where they have surgery, and some just  a couple weeks. In my opinion, I think it's best to take a few months. Only because we are more prepared for whats about to happen. I liked the time that I had to talk to people, get to know my doctor and his staff, and the support I have gotten from here and in my support group. Isn't it better for us to take more time, so that we are a lot more prepared?

Another thing...the beginning weights of some people have baffled the hell out of me. One lady only weighed 203 and had Gastric Bypass. Isn't that a bit too extreme of a surgery to have on such a low weight ? I would think the Band would be a better choice for her. Maybe I'm wrong, but this lady was 5'5 and weighed 203..I thought we had to be severely obese and at least 100 pounds over weight to have Gastric Bypass......

also...tattoos! I want one, but I don't know if it's safe to get one prior to surgery? or should I wait til after?

I noticed on another site I belong to ...that a few of the newer members only went through a 3-4 week process. One lady is seriously driving me nuts because she asks something new every day. She's like 4 weeks post-op now and SERIOUSLY has no clue what she is doing. All of the stuff she's asking should of been taught to her. She put herself on puree food 4 days out and then posted saying she was worried. I'm like HELLOOOO out there LOL!

Put it this way. With everything I've read, learned, and witnessed ....if I had to do it all over again I would still wait the several months! And if I were a pre-op patient I would question my surgeons office as to why they aren't offering support groups and all that other fun stuff we went through. I have read that some places aren't even doing any testing, just blood work. That seems crazy to me!

Any way, I have 7 tattoos. 6 of them I got before surgery and 1 after. I never had any problems with any of them. They have maintained their "shape" even with the weight loss.

That's what I'm talking about. How can you know what to do properly after surgery if you aren't educated..?  I had a friend that had her surgery within 2 months. She never drank protein shakes, took vitamins, or exercised. Now she is bale, no muscle tone, severely anemic, and she looks like a bag of bones. She said she was never told how to really eat..... She was just in the hospital cause her iron level was so low. And she was only 90 pounds overweight when she had surgery. She recommended her doctor to me but I said...NO THANKS!!  I want the education and the support. Even though I was so overwhelmed over all the tests and crap, I knew it was the best thing for me to succeed.

lisa my beautiful sister...

just gloss over some of the stuff that you read...there are some idiots out there...I was very well educated, and there was nothing that could prepare me for the emotional part of the journey...

and just listen to you doc as far as what to eat..there are a million way to get from here to there..and they are all right.some doc have you eating solids before you leave the hospital...and his patients do as good and the one that go through the hell liquids for 6 weeks...as long as the doc know what you are doing, if there is a problem...he knows how to treat it..

on some of the light weights getting RNY..GAWD...I think like you, but you will see that if you pay cash you can get what ever you want...and sometimes with insurance...sifferent things are paid for..

there are some more freaks out there...so take it with a grain of salt...(or low cal sweetner)

Also, consider that comorbidities play a huge part.  You can qualify for WLS with a bmi of 35 if you have diabetes. For some people, it is a cure......so some people in Europe are doing the surgery on normal weight people with hard to control diabetes.

If you saw on a daily basis what i do, you would totally root for someone with Diabetes to have this surgery early on to prevent all of the badness that comes along with that disease.

Today i had a 24 year old kid, with an A1c of 11.2, that had to have half of his perineum removed....blah.

Thanks everyone for reminding me about others with illnesses that are a result of being over weight. I have them myself, and I guess I jumped the gun a bit on my post. I should have thought more about this before I posted and complained!...
