I am stuck at 246.  I am getting in all my protien, and my water.  I am exercising 20 minutes on the eliptical and walking.  Been here for 3 days.  I was losing 1-2 pounds a day before this.  I am two weeks out today.... Any thoughts?

yup....stop weighing yourself everyday LOL  I know it's easier said than done.  but being this early out, I would probably weigh myself 1 time a week.  There will be days where you don't lose anything for a couple days and then it'll take off again.  In my case, I would stall for a week or two and then lose 10 pounds the next week LOL  Just be patient hon :)

Um yeah.  Thats not going to happen.  I am scale obsessed at this point.  I know thats not healthy, but the weight loss is the point of going through all this!  I cant not weigh!   However I know you are right.  I guess it just doesnt make sense to me how you can only eat so little and still NOT lose weight.  In my head I think that I am not going to lose the weight.  The surgery did not work.  I know thats crazy.  But still....

well you'll also go through a period of "OMG WTF did I do to myself?!?!?!!?!?!?" and have a bit of buyer's remorse......but rest assured it's just a phase.  I went through it too.  I had periods of "Is this it?" and trust me......you're just at the beginning of a very crazy roller coaster.  Hang in there hon....and if you have doubts in what you're eating, talk to your nut and see what they say.

Is is so normal.  I posted a couple weeks after surgery with the same problem.  I was stuck for two weeks, but starting losing again.  Everyone told me it goes in spurts.  I seem to be stuck again at 203...well at least for the past 4 days.

When you magically drop x pounds per day or x pounds in the first week, two weeks, three weeks, etc. after surgery, it feels like a dream come true.

But: IT. WILL. STOP. Because it is NOT fat. It is WATER. This is what is happening, courtesy of Diana Cox, who is a molecular biologist Ph.D. and taught stuff like this in medical school. She makes me look smart :-).

Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet.

As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

I was told that there are a couple points in the first year that most people hit plateaus at.  The two week, 3 month and 5 month points are the only ones I remember hearing about, but there are more.  This was brought up at a bariatric support group and just about everyone in the room nodded when they heard that.

In my own experience when I crossed that point a few weeks back, I lost a TREMENDOUS amount of weight in the first week (like 21 poinds) and then only lost 4 my second.  I was pretty depressed until I heard this was common.

Keep the faith, keep it up on the eliptical, and regardless of what the scale says keep paying attention to the way your clothes fit.  You'll be amazed at the changes you see in your body even when the scale doesn't budge.

Also, don't forget with excercise you're stopping your muscle loss and may even start picking up some extra muscle.  That scale's a lyin' little ******* when you think about it.

Oh, and Foobear, that was an awsome post.  I didn't know any of that.

Yeah, it really explains a lot, like "how can I be eating so little and not be losing weight?!?!?!"

I think they should tattoo that post (I can't take credit for it) upside down on everyone's belly during their RNY!  It's astonishing how many people hit their first stall and end up worrying needlessly that something has broken and they're not going to lose any more weight!  Why don't people's surgeons or nutritionists warn people of this beforehand?  (Maybe they do, but no one pays attention?)
