Diet Soda, thoughts??

I've been reading to see if it's ok to consume diet soda after RNY. My nut says its fine if I can tolerate it. Some people can, some people can't. All things in moderation, of course. I see that some people say that the carbonation stretches the pouch, but I haven't found anything solid in terms of proving that statement. I'm not talking about consuming several a day..more like one can, once in a while. I do know there is concern that the caffeine can keep calcium from absorbing.

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

the only thing that my nut tells me is that I can have diet soda as long as I let it set out for a few hours so it'll get flat......I'd rather stick to coffee or tea.....I hate flat soda!  LOL

If you surgery date of 10/01/08 is correct -- I wouldnt' consider touching diet soda until you've been 6 months out.  I don't drink diet soda -- not really a soda person -- but when I do it's non-caff root beer or ginger ale and then if it's a bottle it takes me at least 3 days to drink it.

I don't know about your NUT or surgeon -- but my instructions where for 6 months to a year before soda or even caffeine.  You don't want to rush re-introducing foods or drinks you consumed prior to your surgery.

My nutritionist ok'd it if I could tolerate it after the 6 week mark. I had a 1/2 can of diet soda this afternoon with no issues. I burped a bit..didn't feel crazy full or anything.  Caffeine never really came up as a no no at any point in my conversations with either nutritionist or surgeon. I don't really drink a ton of caffeine, but occasionally I'll have a little coffee or a black tea.  Everyone's instructions from their bariatric teams are so different, i guess in the end we all have to do what feels right and best for us.

Soda is my evil addiction! (I have a blog about the whole deal on my page)

But anyway, I decided to have a Mountain Dew one day (one of my weaknesses pre-op) and it's been hard since. I have a can a few times a week. I don't even finish the can ..just take a few sips to get rid of the craving. But still.

(oh, and it's not diet either...and for me it doesn't cause dumping)

My wife can have one of those little 8 oz cans.  I can barely tolerate a sip or two.  Hurts like a mofo.

The carbonation ain't gonna stretch your pouch.  It's a tube that's open on both ends.

I can't have it right from the can. Hurts like crazy. I have to de-fizz it some. I can have a little carbonation.but not much. I think it tickles when it's the right amount. I have regular pop since sweeteners give me migraines.

Well this is my input on the soda.  I am six months out . The only soda i will have is a can of diet rootbeer, after it goes flat and i mix it with my vanilla protein powder to make a rootbeer float flavor.  Just be carefull with drinking it without letting it go flat.  I know for me its one of the evil foods.  Before surgery I was drinking 2 2liter bottles of diet coke every day.
