Really Disappointed

Ok, so I know a couple of you guys have asked me what's going on with getting approved for the surgery. Well, here's where I am.

Just for those who don't know, here's the basic jist of things. My insurance company says they'll approve it and I'm good to go, but the company I work for has a policy that I have to do a 6 month supervised diet that no one told me about until after I had already been on this road for, conveniently, close to 6 months. My HR department (while I was on a 3 way conversation with my insurance company) told me to submit a written appeal so I submitted that along with all of my medical records.

Well, I got a response today. They said my claim needed to be reviewed through my insurance company. HELLOOOOOO! THEY ALREADY DID!!!! I called my HR Department again and by coincidence got the same woman I had talked to before so she remembered me. She did a little checking and found that NO ONE had researched my claim at all. She said she was going to work on it, but it would take some time.

The kicker is that all the bills from all the testing I've been through have come in. With all my other bills I barely have enough money to eat right now. And because of all the delays, it looks like I'm going to have to do most of the testing all over again. But oh wait! Dec 31 is when my deductible resets. So I'm going to have to pay even more for my surgery.

Oh, and my Dad got laid off yesterday on my birthday.

Ever feel just cursed??

I am so sorry!!  BUT  talk to your HR lady again, since you are basically appealing this she needs to contact the insurance company and get a temporary freeze on the bills!  When my brothers wife was sick with cancer the hr dept did wonders for him! Good luck!

It's always good to have someone in HR; they can be a great advocate because of the legalities the company may find themselves involved in.  Should she find that the insurance company did not perform in good faith -- they could be in trouble as well.

Just about EVERY insurance company have that 6 mth supervised weight loss policy -- I'm not sure that's requested by the company but a catch all that insurance companies have written in because the surgery has become so popular.  Those requirements where just instituted about 3 years ago because my partner is 5 years out and her insurance company -- at the time -- did not require such a process.

Keep in touch with the HR Rep -- at least you have her name and you don't have to repeat the process you've gone through to anyone else.

Sad to hear your Dad has been laid off --- hope they gave him two weeks pay or more.  This economy is going crazy.  Goes to show that greed only looks at what is good for them at the time and not the far reaching effects those "creative fiancing" mortgages would get us into such trouble.

Keep the faith.
