I missed you, and I can see that I'll have to spend a little time catching up with everyone's posts!

Surgery on Monday was uneventful and the care I received at Newton-Wellesley Hospital was amazing.  I came home on Thursday and within two hours had my first experience with food "getting stuck."  OMG -- what fun!!  I can hardly wait to DUMP!!  Kidding aside, it was very painful and upsetting.  For some reason, a 1/2 cup of pureed lentil soup decided to sit right smack in the middle if my solar plexis FOR HOURS!  I felt awful and couldn't stop PB-ing.  A call to my surgeon put me at ease, and by this morning I was feeling better.  I was fully expecting to be able to dive into a bowl of blended chicken salad, but it seems that I might have to wait a while and give myself more time to heal.  I am having trouble with gas and its decision to seek a northern route of escape.  Seems like my pouch gets gassy very quickly.  This too shall pass...

Another unpleasantry are the two injections of lovenox to my abdomen each day, for the next ten days.  This is to prevent blood clots from forming, and according to my doctor, is routinely perscribed to patients over 40 with a BMI over 50.

So, I'm sipping, walking, burping and very, very grateful to all of you for your support, good wishes, and humor.

Hey there stranger! Glad to hear all went well.

Now, hold your hand out so I can slap it for even thinking about trying anything but full liquids this soon out......O.K., I guess you suffered enough for your mistake already.......Just remember to take it slow, you need a lot more time to heal. I am 4 months out and I still have a hard time with some solid foods. There are days when it all goes well, and other days when I can't take much and depend on my protein shakes to get through the day. You will learn quick what works O.K. for you.

You may want to try some gas-x or something to help with your gas. Gas-x makes strips that melt in your mouth, and they don't taste too bad. Walking as much as you can will also help with this. I had an awful time at first and ended up back in the hospital for a couple of days because my body couldn't process it......fun, fun, fun. As long as you are getting it up, or down, and out, it is a good sign (I couldn't get it out either way, never wanted to fart so bad in my life..... I know ...TMI...lol)

Get some rest and sip, sip, sip

YEAH Joanne!!! So glad you had an uneventful experience. Sorry about the gas...just burp and fart like a 9 year old boy...loud and proud. I had to do Lovenox for 28 days after surgery...all bypass patients at my hospital have to do that. But it does make the likelihood of a DVT or Pulmonary Embolism very rare. Hang in there...Drink as much as you can..it's hard as hell, but you can do it. Stay ahead of the pain with your meds...even if you're awake every 3 hours around the clock.

Best wishes to you for a speedy recovery...so glad to hear from you!

Of course you were missed you sweeety! Remember sip sip sip (not chew, chew, chew)! And you know those blood clots can literally kill, so you be good and poke you-self.

Hey Joanne-
missed you and thought about you, hoping all went well, and glad to hear it did. Yes, that gas business ain't no fun. I'm wondering how long more it will be and if it will EVER go away. One thing your pouch might find soothing- try SF popsicles. It helps for me. Some people say the sugar alcohol in it causes them to dump. I don't have that problem at all. You will find yourself going to the store and trying all different kinds of things, some that work and some that don't. I recently discovered a delayed allergic reaction to whey protein (hives broke out on my face and scalp- not a pretty sight) so I am now on soy protein which also agrees better wih the stomach.  I hope you have no trouble getting all your protein and fluids in. Keep posting. We love hearing from you. Aloha, Carla

Welcome back Joanne,

Glad all went well with your surgery, and you are home and relaxing. I am not looking forward to the lovenox shots at all...The nursing director on the baritric floor where I work told me you don't feel them because you don't have any nerves in your stomach.....She LIED to me didn't she!!!!!!
