Hi all,
Well I went to the doctors on Monday. I am having the gastric by=pass surgery on Monday Nov 24th . I am nervous as heck! I really wanted the lap band but my doc said that the gastric bypass would bennifit me more due to my type 2 diabetes. I'm a lesbian who married last year here in MA. I work with children whom live in a residential home for aggressive youth. does anyone know how long a person is usually out of work ?
peace,
Gayle

Hey Gayle -- glad you found us, and welcome to this forum. You will find lots of support and friendship here.

As far as time away from work, I'm sure the people here who have already had surgery can tell you, but I heard anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks.

(My surgery is on Monday, so I know what you mean about being nervous!)

Hi Gayle! Welcome to the best board here.

I was out of work for 4 weeks. That was cause my Grandma was here and I didn't wantt o go bac****il she left and my leave was approved until Feb 15 (I went back a few days before that). I do know that at my 3 month check up my A1C was 4.7 which is low and I just had it done again and it was 5.1. I was eating TONS of carbs too so I could up my salt intake. (I am having blood pressure issues. It gets way low and I pass out.) I hate salt unless it's on carbs.

I shall now be know as Hagatha: Queen of the queens.

Welcome! I was out of work for 2 weeks, but depending on what type of work you do will determine how long you are out (that and how you feel). I have a desk job, nothing physical so I had no worries going back after 2 weeks.

I also have type 2 diabetes and since my surgery have stopped taking medicine, my last A1C was 5.7 (a smidge high, but I had just had another surgery when this was taken so my doc wasn't concerned with it, said it was normal due to the stress your body goes through during surgery)

Hi Gayle!
Welcome to the board!  how long you are OUT depends on what TYPE of bypass you get.. I had mine done Laproscopically and was up and running around in 3 days.. but was out of work by Dr's order for 2 weeks..  hope this helps!

Hi,

Welcome to the group.  You will love it here!

My doctor wanted to sign me out for 6 weeks.  My HR approved me for 4.  I probably could have gone back after 2, but since I had 100% paid time off, I took it :-)

Most people it is 2-3 I believe.  You will be happy to have the time off.  You will be tired and really happy you had the time to rest.  I under estimated how tired i would be.

Welcome to the group, its the best one on OH. I had type 2 diabetes I Had to have insulin while I was in the hospital, the iv drove up my sugar is what they told me. I only took 1 pill one day after I got home, I did not take the other which is 2 pills in 1. my sugar is around 79 every morning with out taking any meds. As far as out of work mine is set for a month but talking with the doctor today she wants to make sure I am getting my water and protein and have more energy that I have now so she was talking about 6 weeks. I would rather be safe than to go back and have problems and having to go back out.
