Questions I have for people who have had surgery already!
I have some questions that I have not seen pop up here on the board so I am going to post them here and hopefully some of you will message back! If its not something you want to post here you can private message it to me if you feel comfortable!
Here are my biggest questions:
1. What was your recovery like? Pain levels? Meds? How long before you felt up to doing your regular routine. How long till you drove? Seriously, if it was awful I want to know. I do better with information.
2. I am kinda obsessing about what I will look like when I lose weight. I cant imagine it. Never been thin. Is there a website that does virtual weight loss from photos?
3. Have any of you managed to keep your boobs? Have any of you gotten implants? Here or in Mexico?
4. My biggest fear is muscle loss, and looking sick. How have you kept that from happening? Do you think you are as strong as you were before?
5. Do you feel like people look at you differently? Do your friends treat you differently? I feel like some people dont think this weight loss is legitimate because its surgical. Like its cheating. Do people say that to you?
6. What food do you miss the most? I am a steak girl. Love my ribeye. That and the garlic bread at my favorite steak house.
7. My doc says I can still play football after surgery. Do you guys think that is really possible with how YOU feel afterwards?
Thanks for taking time to address some of the stuff whirling around in my brain.....LOL. :)

1. What was your recovery like? Pain levels? Meds? How long before you felt up to doing your regular routine. How long till you drove? Seriously, if it was awful I want to know. I do better with information. My recovery was challenging, in part because I got an infection about a week after surgery and it took 5-6 weeks to really get it under control. I was on pain meds for a lot of that time. I probably was back to something close to my normal routine after 2-3 months, although I was more tired than usual for 4-5 months. I did not drive for 4-5 weeks after surgery, but I think I would have been okay to drive after 1-2 weeks if it hadn't been for the infection. Was it awful? Some of it was. Was it worth it? Absolutely.
2. I am kinda obsessing about what I will look like when I lose weight. I cant imagine it. Never been thin. Is there a website that does virtual weight loss from photos? I don't know about a virtual weight loss website, but a lot of folks in the plastic surgery forum post before and after pictures. You could look at posts in that forum to get some idea what you might look like after weight loss.
3. Have any of you managed to keep your boobs? Have any of you gotten implants? Here or in Mexico? My boobs are basically goners. I'm having a breast lift to remove the excess skin in December. Pre-op I was a DDD; after the skin removal I'll be lucky to be a C. I'm not getting implants; I do not want a foreign object in my body, but that's a personal thing.
4. My biggest fear is muscle loss, and looking sick. How have you kept that from happening? Do you think you are as strong as you were before? Eating enough protein should help you avoid muscle loss. That will be a challenge right after surgery, but it gets better over time as you can eat more. I'm stronger than I was pre-op, but I also do a lot more exercise now that I did before my bypass.
5. Do you feel like people look at you differently? Do your friends treat you differently? I feel like some people dont think this weight loss is legitimate because its surgical. Like its cheating. Do people say that to you? Yes, people look at me differently. My friends do not treat me differently. Some people think it's cheating, but that's their problem, not mine.
6. What food do you miss the most? I am a steak girl. Love my ribeye. That and the garlic bread at my favorite steak house. I can still eat anything, just in smaller quantities, and I cannot eat much sugar at one time. Some folks do have problems with certain foods after surgery, so it's best to be prepared to accept some limitations in what you can eat. Trust me, the sacrifice is worth it!
7. My doc says I can still play football after surgery. Do you guys think that is really possible with how YOU feel afterwards? Immediately after surgery? No way! After you've recovered and are well-healed. Absolutely!

Hi good lookin,
I am three weeks out so everything is VERY fresh in my head.
1. What was your recovery like? Pain levels? Meds? How long before you felt up to doing your regular routine. How long till you drove? Seriously, if it was awful I want to know. I do better with information. I really needed three weeks...just due to being so freaking tired. My second day was hell but I had horrible swelling. They gave me steriods for that and it helped. I took an anebolic (sp) steriod for a week when I came home. I could have drove the day i came home, but I took hydrocodone for a week so I couldn't. To be honest, I took the hydrocodone mainly because I love pain meds, LOL, not that I needed it.
2. I am kinda obsessing about what I will look like when I lose weight. I cant imagine it. Never been thin. Is there a website that does virtual weight loss from photos? I have not heard of that
3. Have any of you managed to keep your boobs? Have any of you gotten implants? Here or in Mexico? Mine are natural and I have been blessed with great boob structure even being bigger. I have, already, lost one inch in my bust line, but I could care less if the fall or whatever...that is what a good bra is for!!
4. My biggest fear is muscle loss, and looking sick. How have you kept that from happening? Do you think you are as strong as you were before? I plan on weight training a bit. I used to years ago before getting so big and I enjoyed it. Maybe talk to your doc about a weight training routine.
5. Do you feel like people look at you differently? Do your friends treat you differently? I feel like some people dont think this weight loss is legitimate because its surgical. Like its cheating. Do people say that to you? I have had so many people oppose this including my mom, who supports it now. So many people say to diet and work out. Well duh, if that worked I would not have needed the surgery to kick start me. I have one person in my life in particular who is extremely fake in her support. The good thing is...I could care less who supports me. I did this for myself. 99% of people have been 100% supportive. I have a ton of my residents that have had WLS. I never knew until I made public my WLS. Then they cannot talk about it enough!!
6. What food do you miss the most? I am a steak girl. Love my ribeye. That and the garlic bread at my favorite steak house. I will prob miss a huge amount of pasta. I do not eat meat so that is not a problem. I do not know yet since I am still in the pureed phase. It sux.
7. My doc says I can still play football after surgery. Do you guys think that is really possible with how YOU feel afterwards? I would wait a month or so. Just so you can heal.

Pain wasn't too bad. The hardest part was getting up out of bed. I drove after about a week, but it wasn't easy. I could do everything for myself at home right away, but going back to work took 4 weeks.
2. I am kinda obsessing about what I will look like when I lose weight. I cant imagine it. Never been thin. Is there a website that does virtual weight loss from photos?
I think LandsEnd has a virtual model.
3. Have any of you managed to keep your boobs? Have any of you gotten implants? Here or in Mexico?
Nope, deflated boobage here. They were already sagging, but now they just hang. Thank goodness for good bras.
4. My biggest fear is muscle loss, and looking sick. How have you kept that from happening? Do you think you are as strong as you were before?
The key to keeping muscle mass is weight training. I didn't start exercising until a few months ago. While I never looked sick, I was not very strong. After a few months at the gym, I can feel my body getting stronger and I'm looking more "toned".
5. Do you feel like people look at you differently? Do your friends treat you differently? I feel like some people dont think this weight loss is legitimate because its surgical. Like its cheating. Do people say that to you?
My friends are so excited for me, but they treat me the same. No one has ever said I cheated at weight loss. They are happy that I have regained my health and compliment me all the time on how good I look.
6. What food do you miss the most? I am a steak girl. Love my ribeye. That and the garlic bread at my favorite steak house.
I eat everything in moderation, but I can no longer tolerate eggs and I miss them.
7. My doc says I can still play football after surgery. Do you guys think that is really possible with how YOU feel afterwards?
Not right away, but absolutely. I'm 14 months out and I really work out hard at the gym.
Hope some of the answers help you out.

Hi Barb,
All great questions...here are my answers after being out 5 weeks....
1. What was your recovery like? Pain levels? Meds? How long before you felt up to doing your regular routine. How long till you drove? Seriously, if it was awful I want to know. I do better with information. The pain was manageable as long as I stayed in front of it with pain meds. I was off of the oxy within 10 days because I wanted to be able to drive. If I wasn't in front of the pain, it hurt like a motha...One incision in particular, the top left one was exteremely sore. I call her my angry girl. She took a few weeks to heal. I'm back in my regular routine except the exercise because I'm waiting for my pulled suture or muscle, whatever the hell it is to heal.
2. I am kinda obsessing about what I will look like when I lose weight. I cant imagine it. Never been thin. Is there a website that does virtual weight loss from photos? I do know exactly what I'll look like because I lost a ton of weight on Atkins before. Of course I gained all back and then some. I'm not sure if there is anything like that out there.
3. Have any of you managed to keep your boobs? Have any of you gotten implants? Here or in Mexico? I'm not going to lie, I have great tits...They are my favorite thing about myself and they are already shrinking. I'm so sad...I don't see myself getting implants..not really my style.
4. My biggest fear is muscle loss, and looking sick. How have you kept that from happening? Do you think you are as strong as you were before? I have very good color and people comment all the time that if it wasn't for the rapid weight loss they couldn't tell that I had surgery.
5. Do you feel like people look at you differently? Do your friends treat you differently? I feel like some people dont think this weight loss is legitimate because its surgical. Like its cheating. Do people say that to you? People are staring at me constantly right now..and some people say some incredibly stupid **** but my friends, my constants, are awesome. Family is super supportive...
6. What food do you miss the most? I am a steak girl. Love my ribeye. That and the garlic bread at my favorite steak house. I was never this huge fan of Chili's but their commercials are KILLING me right now. I'm not on my final stage of eating yet. I have a week and a half left, but I'll definitely be avoiding a lot of crap to avoid dumping...that means fried foods and high sugar.
7. My doc says I can still play football after surgery. Do you guys think that is really possible with how YOU feel afterwards?

Ok for me, sugery was only 5 days today ago, it hurt on a pain scale of 1-10 I was a 5 but i didn't want to take a lot of pain meds, I made myself get out of bed as soon as I got to my room and I also made myself take a lap of the ward, I stayed out of the bed as much as I could, it helped the gas move, and I walked as often as I could even if it was just in the room, They operated at 11am Friday and released me Sunday at 10am as far as I could see non of the other bariatric patients had even got up to walk, I'm not trying to make myself sound good here, I am just saying that a really positive determined attitude can help a lot. Also for right now I am not taking any diabeties meds, no blood presure either, and I try to keep the perscription pain meds to before I go to bed so it helps me sleep good, I take Tylonal is that how it's spelt, during the day.
Today I am feeling much more human!
That's all I can add for now !!
