Aches and Pains
Hey all
I kinda wanted to poll everyone and see what experiences people have with this. I've been told after I have the surgery a lot of the knee and back problems that I've had over the years will ease up and possibly go away. I'm sure with the increased exercise and the decreased weight that's true, but I wanted to hear it from the horse's mouth, so to speak. I've had to deal with so much pain over the last 15 years that it's hard for me to wrap my head around it.

Well I'm kind of mixed on the whole thing really. I was 500 pounds before surgery and I had to get off about 50 pounds before surgery so the exercise I did before surgery hurt me badly. After surgery and a few months my back pain went away for the most part but I developed a lot of fluid on my knees and had to have them drained and get cortisone shots in them and got really bad arthritis. So my knees still hurt. But I'm right there with you I lived with pain daily and it's nice to say that I have considerably less pain. It is different from person to person depending on what other things are going on in their bodies.
OH and I used to have a TON of pain in my hips too.....almost to the point of being wheelchair bound........but I AM happy to say that my hips have not given me any trouble since the surgery! Also my foot pains have gone away.

Yea, my hips are a problem too. At first I just thought it was my mattress. But then reality said "yea, not so much."
I really don't think I'll ever be pain free. Thanks to a drunk driver that hit me head on at 16, my knees have been pretty well rearranged. I've had surgery on both knees and none of my doctor's have been confident that I'll never have to go through it again.
Thanks for sharing your perspective on things. It actually does give me a little bit of hope that some of this will ease up.
I'm really glad I found this place. I just got here and you guys are awesome already

I cannot tell you yet, but I have heard from millions those pains will go away. I was 250 lbs at the top of my game, but over the past year, I have felt the pain on joints so I hope that goes away. I can tell you my acid reflux and heartburn is already gone. I really hope for the best for all of us!!

hey cutie......be careful with that acid reflux and heartburn. I had GERD before surgery and for me it never went away. Although it doesn't go up into my throat anymore, I still get it. It's repositioned itself in my intestines where the part of the stomach that is still producing acid dumps into the intestine where we start our digestion. That can overflow with acid and cause nausea as well as a burning sensation like heartburn but it's down around your belly button. Keep taking your antactids. I'm 5 months out and I still have to take a pepcid a day.
I had had back issues for almost 20 years when I had the surgery. I am almost completely pain free. I have had problems maybe about 2 or 3 times since January. My knees don't bother me as much. I needed surgery in '95 for them and if I didn't have it I would need knee replacements by the time I was 30. I am not to the point that I think I need them anymore ASAP. I can wait awhile. My problem is all the positions the hubby comes up with kills them. Damn horndog that I married.

I have managed to fracture my right tibial plateau (base of the knee) 3 times in the past 2 years and have had surgery on it twice. The last surgery I had to have a bone graft and a steel plate and screws put in my knee, I live with joint pain.....though it has not completely gone away, it has decreased an amazing amount since I have lost weight. I hope that it will go away completely when I get to my goal weight, though my orthopedic doc has told me that I will always have some pain (nice guy). I still hold out hope.

I have had difficulties with my knees and hips since I was a kid. I was born with hip dysplasia. They over corrected....SO since the surgery I have had less pain...with the added activity I have more stiffness but no pain. I herniated a disc 7 years ago when I was thrown into a table. I used to have daily pain.....it is now gone.....The weight loss will not fix worn out joints ...but the less weight the less stress.
