Hi everyone!
I'm a bit of a lurker here but I thought I come out and ask for a little advice...
My primary Dr gave me a referal to see a Bariatric Surgeon but the Dr she wants me to see only does the lapband.... And I have been studying for a couple years now the pros and cons and decided I wanted the RNY..... Should I just go ahead and schedule a consultation with the Dr that only does the lapband or should I talk to my Primary and see if she can refer me to another the specializes in more fields then just the one?.......
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have a great night everyone
Nessa

If, after years of studying the pros and cons, you've decided the RNY is best for you....why in the world would you schedule a consultation with a doctor who doesn't do the procedure??

Well my primary thinks that is the way to go,and since she refered him I just wanted to know should I or shouldn't I......

The very first thing you have to embrace in this journey is this is the single most important decision you will make for yourself and ONLY for you.  Stepping up now and begining to assert your own desires to your pcp is good thing to do.  If you have no desire to have a lap band, then tell them so.  Explain your reasoning.  And ask..nicely, for an appropriate referral.  Its OK to ask for what you want with your physicians.  Most docs prefer it when you show them that you have a good understanding and have done the research!  Good Luck!

Oh, I see.  I would first ask why she believes the lap band is the more appropriate choice for you -- perhaps she has some medical concerns.

Hiya hon!  firstly....LOVE the avatar :)  Secondly, this is such a personal decision to make.  yes your PCP can make recommendations to you and i agree with Joanne.  Ask your PCP why they chose the lap band and then tell them why you choose the RNY.  They are there to serve you and they need to know what you are thinking and they need to know every question you have.  Now is the time to be assertive because you will need that ssertiveness in the furture once you start going for approvals.

good luck!

I wouldn't see the one who only does the band if that's not what you want. When I went for my consult I decided already what I wanted. i also found my surgeon here on OH. I would suggest going to the NY board and asking around there for reccomendations. Also, most docs have a seminar you have to attend, go to ones in your area. Most importantly GO WITH YOUR GUT ON YOUR DOCTOR!!! No pun intended. I kept feeling I should go to the one in Middletown but looked at the map and thought it was too far (I am from Ohio and it's just a little bigger than CT so my map reading was off****il I talked to someone and she told me how far it was from where we lived. I think I made the best choice. I had also talked to a friend who had it and I did NOT have a good feeling about her doctor. Turns out his nickname at the hospital he was at is "The Butcher"

My PCP strongly recommended one particular physician - because he gave the first seminar that convinced her WLS could be a good thing, and because he keeps her in the loop when he does a proceedure on her patients. Turns out, her recommendation had little to do with his actual surgical or interpersonal competence. I will not be using him. Now, when she told me she's had horrible experiences with two other doctors and please don't got to either of them - she had real reasons and I absolutely listened to her.
