I know what you mean!!  Just keep reading the boards and talking to the people that have had RNY and DS , then discuss it with whomever and know that when you choose you are on your way to a new and improved you! Good luck!~Ann~

DS was never an option for me, because my insurance doesn't cover it, and at least so far, there's no surgeon in the New England area who performs it!  (I'm a firm believer of having your surgery as close to your home as possible.)  Now that I've had the RNY, I kinda wish that I could'a had a DS!

I wonder if Angus could share his experience so far as a recent DSer?

I keep seeing alot of people say that they wish they could have had a DS... and this is the thing that keeps bringing me back to looking that option over.

On the other hand... There are more RNY patients then there are DS patients (RNY has been around longer)  but why do I find more DS patients who have complications?

I hear the reasoning that more RNY patients have revisions, so you dont hear about it.. but when you have a DS there's nothing that you can revision to (from what I've read)

I know I'm going to beat this horse to death again in the next few months.   But bear with me.. I think I need to, because its a decision I have to live with for the next umpteen years

Okay. How about a vertical sleeve gastrectomy?! Kidding. Your heart and your head will get things straightened out between themselves soon enough.

It's not an easy choice. You really need to weigh the pros and cons of all the surgeries and how you would live with them.

I'm very happy with my RNY, if that helps at all.

I thought about a DS also but my doctor doesn't do them. I wasn't going to switch. The other thing is I saw where you can still eat almost anything after a DS. I didn't want that. I needed something to keep me honest. Trust me, an RNY will do that. I would suggest talking to your doctor about this to see what he thinks would be the best for you. I know my doctor sits down with all his patients and goes over their eating habits and discusses the band and RNY to see which is the best "fit" for them.

My dear brother...youare right on track...doing your research on these procedures...read read read...talk to people...

there are success and failure in all procedures...find the one that is right for you...Rny you dump....DS if you eat the wrong thing you

this is a huge debate, and the DS people are very vocal...

Ok you are shopping for a tool..you want a shovel or a pick axe..theey will both get the job done..which will you use better....which can you handle for the long term

Congrats the on the brain power you are putting into this

This comment isn't meant to be negative in anyway, but this is what I notice alot on the boards..

When someone questions the surgery, alot of times you see a huge deluge of posts from the DS-ers.   It's like those Price Line commercials when someone's debating airline costs.. BOOM Shatner appears to set them straight.   You really don't find that with the RNYers.  The DSers are more militant about their posts (almost like a cult)
Again, I only say this because it's very confusing when trying to pick the right surgery because all the negatives you hear about the DS are balanced out by all the "cool kids" who had the DS.   I rarely run in to an RNYer with a blog that goes into great detail about the surgery, where as with the DS folks their blogs are jammed pack with info.

I know I'm wrambling, and again Im not picking on anyone.. I actually fully embrace all of the opinions and comments and posts...

I'm just so afraid that 10 years down the line I'll find myself bed-ridden because my body couldn't handle the re-wiring.   Almost like the PhenFen recall, or the Silicone Breast implants.   Usually it's "For Decades people have been.... only to find out it was bad"   But these surgeries are so new that you can't find long term WLS studies (10+ years)
But again.. with any surgery it's probably always a gamble

Actually, the only WLS that has been around for 10+ years is the RNY. I know someone who had it back in the 80s.
