Gout I thought I was done with that old friend

After surgery my primary care took me off the allopurinol and all was well. Sunday I woke up with heel pain during the day I kept thinking what on earth did I do to my heel. Yesterday I got up for work and it was much worse still pondering what could I have done to my foot. Fears of a blood clot crept thru my little mind. This morning even worse pain I was on the train to work and the conductor said I hope it is not gout. GOUT thats it I should have known. Now I am a two hour train ride from home a full day of meetings and all I want to do is get home and take my meds. I was warned by my surgeon that I could get a gout attack after surgery. I was hoping to stay off daily meds I am down from 13 a day to one and wanted to stay that way.

Ya know, I am the same way. I wanted to be off all my meds except a few cause I knew I couldn't go off them. (Stuff for migraines, anti-depressants, thyroid, and birth control) I am back on a med for cholesterol (well, I'm on a 6 week trail to get off it right now but I will prolly be back on it) and I am ok with that because I look at what I am not taking now. I am no longer on metformin, blood pressure meds, and something else. I am just happy that I got rid of some of them. Even if you have to take something again, you have gone down from the original 13!

Everytime you have to pop the 2 pills just remind yourself it's better than 13. I still get like that once in a while and have to remind myself that 4 is better than 8ish.

My Dad always swore by cherries and real cherry juice.  I am not sure if your weight loss surgery allows it.  I hope you get the help you need as I heard from him it is horrible pain! good luck to you !~Ann~

I have a patient who has controlled her gout for years and years with just occasionally using her gout medication. If that works for you, maybe it could be just a once in a while thing.

Rapid weight loss tends to increase serum uric acid levels.  Some of this may be due to catabolism, but it's also thought that ketosis reduces the excretion of uric acid by the kidney (the ketones themselves compete with uric acid to pass into the urine.)  In someone predisposed to gout, that can turn into a trigger for an acute attack.  Good luck on what they find!
