Working out

One of the BIG reasons I'm having this surgery is to be in better health so I can start working out again. I know there probably will be a 50 pound weight restriction on me, but how long was it before you could get back into the gym and bust out a good workout?

Back in the early 90s, you couldn't keep me out of the gym, then I had a bad wreck and my ability to get in the gym and work out pretty much STOPPED! I have a friend I used to work out with that's moving back to town and she's recruited me as her trainer again. I can't wait to get back in there!

Thanks!

I had open RNY and the dr would only let me walk  for the first six weeks, then i got the full ok to hit the gym.. I started walking about day 10 when i was feeling like nothing had happened and went from a half mile and upto 3 miles every day now before i lift weight then another mile after the weights..

Wow! No WALKING?!? I don't know how I'd do with that.
I hope they don't have to open me up, but I know that can always happen.

I was walking a mile the day after surgery. Yeah, my surgeon was a slave driver. I think at my two month check up I was cleared for working out more. I could be wrong. I never really did anything more than walking until right before I got sick and had to stop again. I know I didn't have a weight restriction other than "If it hurts, don't do it." My surgeons theory is we are already carrying around all the extra weight so as long as it doesn't hurt it's OK.

Jat - I totally get the healthly part!    When I had my RNY ( a long time ago - wow 4 years just passes so fast!)  I was told not to pu**** as far as weights for the first 3 months but I could walk as much as I felt like I could handle without having pain.  I was walking 3 miles a day within the first month.  I did not start on the weights until the second month.  I did really good but I found I worked my legs must harder than my arms and abs.... not sure if it is just because my legs were easier to work or what.  I did not pick up on the rest until 3-4 month.

Before you do anything, especially since you have had prior injuries, I would check with your DR.   Why risk it?  Better be safe than sorry is my motto because I have seen people over do it and land in the hospital due to dehyrdration and hernias.....

Best of luck to you!  I am so glad that you are excited to work out!  That seems to be the biggest down fall of so many.  They do great on eating but they never establish that exercise mode and have issues later on with weight gain.

Not sure if you have seen Russ from Tx.... he is like the total work out freak (a freak I love dearly!)  You might want to PM him.... I know he will have some words of wisdom!!
Valerie :)
