Still got my tummy, but gone is the gallbladder
Gallbladder surgery is done. Don't let any little whimp medical assistant (or doc) tell you there is no problem with your GB if the ultrasound and hida scans are normal!!! Dr. Porter says it looked normal from the front but he had to carefully cut it away because the whole back side was fused to the liver (from the leaking bile) and the duct showed that I didn't have any stones now, but I sure had been passing them.
Apparently he also took the wife aside and in her words - 'told me I needed to drop any resistance to you having WLS.' I have a fatty liver, and that means fat around the heart. He will see me for the GB followup and then wants to see us both in 2-3months to get working on the WLS.
Feeling better every few hours. Thankfully you forget how absolutely CRAPPY the first two days after surgery are.

I had a friend that happend to. All scans normal, but her symptoms were so bad they still went in. Just like you she had a mess of stones hiding back there!!! They made her think she was crazy there for a while though....frustrating.
I hope the rest of your journey goes more smoothly....and good luck with the wife.

I'm going in for an ultrasound on my Gallbladder in a couple weeks, but my surgeon has already told me that my GB is coming out before surgery. I have at least one stone, but he wants mine out before surgery due to I have had 3 C-sections,and there's a possibility of scar tissue that he doesn't want to deal with during my WLS. He wants to reduce any risk of complications...
I wish you the best with your recovery and with your wife. I have come to realize that when someone loves us, they are just scared that something will happen to us during surgery. Hopefully now your wife will realize that without this surgery..chances are something can still happen to you. Your health is at risk. Good Luck Sweetie..

I think it will really help her that he's a very kind, very well respected local surgeon who has no issues with GLBT people. He also does not affiliate with or advertise with the local bariatric center of excellence.
She has been freaking out about the WLS
1) the two most highly advertised local surgeons are not the most trustworthy, respectable men around (and they control the above mentioned bariatric center)
2) she works as a wound care nurse. Trust me folks, if you want to avoid complications - prepare for your surgery by being well nourished, take your vitamins every day forever , and be aggressive if something seems not right with your band.
3) I have major lifelong issues with people telling me I have to go on a supervised diet, especially since after 6mo, BSBC then will only authorize a band or RNY at/ by issue #1.
So I want to go to Mexico and get it done, not fart around being a good girl to earn care I don't want. My beloved is super afraid that by going to Mexico I will be signing up for something akin to an illegal abortion.
So I will try to be open to growth about the supervised diet thing. Since we have to wait a bit anyway, why not waste some money on weigh****chers or jenny craig. It gives a person a hobby and it won't be the first time. [I still hold out hope that I can maybe get the Digestive Disease guy to recommend a hiatal hernia repair with partial gastrectomy -a girl can dream!]

Let me put it this way. I cannot conceive of moving far away from my hospital and surgeon where I had my RNY (I'm 9 mos. out; maybe after a year I might reassess). If I have any problems, I want to be at their office door like white on rice, and I want to be able to drive (or be driven) there, and be there in 20 minutes, not 20 hours. Luckily, I haven't had any problems at all, though I ascribe some of that to my surgeon's skill.
There are some folks in the LA/San Diego area who have used cross-border surgeons and hospitals, but they are at least close-by. Call me a wimp; if I lived in WA, I would not be booking tickets to Mexico on Expedia for my surgery. I wouldn't even feel comfortable using a surgeon that was more than a few hours away!

We are going to talk with my gallbladder surgeon about options. My ARNP said today that she is sure that she has documented 'supervised wt loss' adequately enough that it shouldn't be a problem, and Dr. Porter has gotten approvals to do RNYs from our insurance at my prefered hospital. So it may be that I will be getting a bypass so that I can do it here at home.
I haven't wanted the malabsorption/ intestinal rerouting of the RNY, but all of you are wonderful living proof that it works. Our sample has been scewed by all the postop screwups we have seen in our years as nurses. The healthy ones never come our way!!!!

Don't worry about WLS right now. Just worry about healing. I wish I could say it gets better each day but it didn't for me since I was allergic to the suture material. As soon as that was off me I felt wonderful. After a week and a half I felt like I hadn't had surgery.
About your wife... My hubby didn't want me to have surgery either but I knew I had to have it. I have bad knees, ankles, and back. I could hardly work, walk, do anything. I had so many health problems it wasn't funny. I decided to do it and didn't let what he thought bother me. I was lucky that my grandmother paid for everything. He has seen me get stuck by 5 people trying to get an IV in for surgery, me begging to go home and promising to come back another day with better veins. He also saw me give in to my biggest fear, I agreed to a central line (the one in your neck) but only after I was asleep. He watched me get Heparin shots every shift for three days when he knows how much I hate needles. After all this he realized that I felt I needed to do this and started supporting me. He now supports me and the decision I made. Except for when I pass out from low blood pressure cause I never got off the second BP med. LOL
