I have been noticing recently that when I lay flat on my back, I have a HUGE barrel chest.  my breastbone and my rib cage sticks out FAR.  Is this normal?  Will the bones reposition themselves to fit around the new insides?  I've got bones sticking out everywhere on my upper body since I can fit into a Large shirt now LOL  bones I never knew I had!

Are you currently, or have you ever been a smoker?

Barrel chestedness is a sign of emphysema.  Have you ever been diagnosed with that?

nope but I've been treated for asthma before.......I used to have chronic bronchitis.......would it come from coughing a lot?  I've had check x-rays before and they have come up clear.

Well, chronic bronchitis and emphysema kinda go hand and hand in the disease of COPD - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  If the barrel chest is from emphysema, it won't get any smaller.  Sorry.

Here's a link to a website with some good info:

Your body remodels the rib bones to make more space for the lungs. It's just a fact - pretty cool accommodation really. If it remodelled out to make space and you don't need the space anymore, it can remodel back. Just give it a few years - yes years.

That being said, I used to have much more of a barrel chest. Feldenkrais training/bodywork helped me A LOT!!  www.feldenkrais.com
