YEE HAWWW!!!
Hello good people! I FINALLY got my date..October 13th. He was pushing for September but my mom just had knee replacement last week and I want to make sure she is fully recovered before she has to be there for me.
I am still a bit unsure how my skinny wife is taking all of this. She says she is supportive, but every chance she gets, she is telling people that I am beautiful just the way I am and how she likes meat on the bones. I hate to say it, but NOTHING would change my mind about this.
Any suggestions for people visiting me at the hospital? Surgery is 7:30 am and they say I will be in the hospital for 2-3 days. My wife is trying to take off work for the days I am in the hospital. SHould she take the days off for when I am home? Will I need to depend on her or will I be self sufficient?
first of all.....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! You must be so freakin excited!!!!! It's going to be here before you know it!
As for having people around after you come home, well I had a house full of people when I came home and I really didn't need them there. It was nice to have them but I got around on my own pretty well. I was driving the day after I came home from the hospital and I was walking on the treadmill the day after (for about 15 minutes then I would need a break). However, it really depends on how much pain you're in and how your body heals. If your wife is home in the evenings, I think that should be alright. I didn't have a lot of pain at all....just a lot of gas that needed to get out.
You know when I first came home, it really felt like they did nothing at all until I drank something LOL I actually stopped using pain medication the day after surgery. I had to spend three days in the hospital (from thursday and went home saturday evening) and stopped that pain pump on Friday because it was slowing my system down so much, my colon wouldn't function. Of course I had a blockage from the leak test so we had to wait for that to go away. It was all swelling anyway.
Hey Sommer, Congrats!!
well you will be OUT OF IT the ENTIRE First day.. but its good to have support before you go under.. if your having it done Lap i was in the hosp for 3 days and after that i drug my sister around to do touristy stuff and she was having a Hard time keeping up with ME.. LOL.. so everyone is diferent..
but Good Luck.. I hope things go well for you..!
Congrats Sommer!
I had lap RNY and I was only in the hospital about 48 hours....I was up walking the halls the first night and the next day several times...even did the stairs, with my partner at the time. I did need somebody when I was home....to wait on my bring me water and ice...they tracked how many oz.s I was taking in... When you shower and stuff you are still a little woozy so it is nice to have someone there. I was off all pain meds 3 days after surgery and even stopped them for awhile in the hospital. But definately needed them on the drive home.
So I think it is nice to have someone in the hospital to advocate for you and some one at home the first couple of days....
Best of luck, and when is your date??
deb
My mother came out to stay with us while I had the surgery. As mentioned... I don't recall ANYTHING about the first day, other than the magic black button that made me fall back asleep.
I slept most of the second day in the hospital too, but I did manage to get up to go to the bathroom and walk around the nurses station a couple of times. I had my surgery on Monday morning, and they released me Wednesday late afternoon.
I was very glad to have someone at home for the first couple of days. My husband couldn't take much time off of work, and I didn't want to be home alone, just in case something happened. It also made me feel better to have someone that would come check on me while I was sleeping, just in case.
PLUS, my mom lives on the other side of the country, so it was nice to have 3 weeks of her visiting without the annoyances of my younger brothers and sister...
Congrats on getting your date! I was in the hospital from Tuesday to Friday. I had my hubby with me in the hospital and then the day after I got home my Grandma flew in to help and was here for three weeks. She came in because I knew my hubby wouldn't help and that I wouldn't stoop to asking the in-laws for help. Good luck with it.
Great news! I had the lap RNY and was in the hospital for 48 hours. Up and walking an hour after I got into my room.... crazy huh? I have to say, having someone when you need to start walking was important to me because the nurses are all so busy. When I was ready, I wanted to move right then. I don't know how many times I was told it was important to get up as soon as possible and that is what I did! So having friends/family in the room with you really helps.
I did need someone the first 2 days at home. I am really independent, not a whiner and pain is not usually a big deal for me - but that is just me, I think it comes from being a military brat! LOL!!! Take advantage of the help if you need it! How often do you get that extra TLC? I also had a great set up at home. Slept (lived) in a recliner for the first week I think. I had a table next to it with everything that I thought I would need for the day. The biggest challenge was going to the restroom but after the first couple of times getting up, I was a pro! Slide and scoot..... I walked like an old lady!!!
How long are you planning on staying off from work?
Best of luck to you - this is the wildest ride! Emotionally and physically!!
You will be in my thoughts!
Good vibes being sent your way!
