Vacation & Food
I am going up to a Camp in Maine end of August for GLBT (www.campcamp) and the only thing that concerns me is the Food
How, do you all handle these Food issues, when it entrirely out of your hands--
I have such an irrational fear of being hungy, but even a bigger fear of screwing up.
I know its vacation and all, if I believe that my surgey is about a lifesyle change (eating healthy) its a little scary to me
How do you all handle eating healthy when the Menu is totally out of your hands, not for one meal but for 21 meals? Thankfully there will be a lot of exercise options available.
Chris
Hi Chris!
I'm fairly early out but I have heard that some people will pack food and take it with them. Even if they are staying in a big city. People will understand if you're bringing your own food if there are no healthier alternatives that you can choose from when you are there.
if anything pack some healthy nut-filled trail mix for a snack or something like that if you're going to do some hiking. Pack plenty of water and things like that.
i hope this helps you and ENJOY your vacation

hey dude... I looked at the site...this looks really cool...
they talk nice about the food...and if you wanted the Vagan stuff it $25 if you think that would settle with you better...
now you are a band...so you don;t dump...(I have to worry that I will dump and mess the afternoon up)
as far as falling off the wagon...you are gonna have to test yourself sometime...at least you are thinking about it ahead of time..
this looks like fun

Going out has been a challenge for me too. But if you stick with the protein sources and avoid the processed carbs you can do okay. First, make sure you have plenty of water. I would at least take a couple of bottles and you can always refill them. Pack all your vitamins. I usually rely on cottage cheese and yougurt when I go visiting but it doesn't sound like you will be able to do that.
If you do canned protein drinks, bars, nuts, jerky....those are all things that could tide you over if need be. I have eaten pizza but not the crust.....hamburger without the bun etc....
Best of luck to you, and enjoy yourself!!

There have been several posts about camping on the lapband board. Perhaps someone there can give you some suggestions. If you have access to ice or a fridge you can take cottage cheese and yogurt, etc. If not, some protein in ziplock individual servings can be added to water to be sure you have enough protein. I take nuts and south beach 100 cal bars when I travel. Maybe someone involved with the camp can tell you what the food is like there.
Have fun!

I just got back a few weeks ago from vacay and I focused on protein and shared meals with the hubby. It was a little hard to do at times but it was do-able. I would suggest calling the camp and talking to someone to see what is the deal with food as in can you bring some and/or what the have. Like Russ said, you are a bandster so it makes it a little easier than us bypassers. Good luck and most of all HAVE FUN!
It's never completely out of your hands. When I go on vacation, visit family, etc., I bring a box of South Beach Diet meal replacement bars. 19g of protein, 210calories and whole grains. With a piece of fruit, it's a perfectly balanced meal. Otherwise, I bring a 1/3 cup measuring cup and I measure portions where I go. Look for lean proteins, fresh fruits & vegetables and leave the rest at the buffet table.
You can always call ahead and ask about healthy eating choices and what they'll have available. If you eat a diabetic's diet, you'll do fine. It's not unlike people calling and asking about Kosher foods. It's your money. Might as well enjoy yourself.
Most places always provide healthy alternatves on any menu. If not, I eat my meal replacement and a piece of fruit before the main attraction. Another thing I do when I travel, is I seek out a local grocery store to buy fresh fruit, non-fat milk and yogurt (if my room has a fridge) and I stock up on the food items that work for me. You can also bring a box of Wasa crackers to use at lunchtime. Put some lean turkey and mustard on add a little fruit and you have a meal.
