I have my first appointment with Dr Luis Gorospe this Friday morning! 5-9-08 I've been researching this for about 3-4 years, I'd joined OH, but never really used the site. This is going to be GREAT!!

Lap Band on 01/19/04

Hey Jat, Good luck on your appointment Friday. 3-4 years of researching is a long time. Good for you. I know you've got to be giddy with excitement. May I ask what type of surgery you're having? I had the lap band. And, no, I'm not one of the freaks who think they're surgery is better than others. Just curios. -julie p.s. Just found this board today from someone on the R&R forum...

I really am on the fence with gastric sleeve and total RNY. I believe Dr Gorospe just started doing the sleeve. That really has nothing to do with it, I'm sure he's very capable. I'm probably leaning more toward the sleeve, though. Thanks Julie!

Have you considered the DS? It's the sleeve with a malabsorptive component. It has very good long-term results.

Well, I did check on the sleeve procedure, it's not covered under insurance. Only RNY and Banding is... thought that was a bit strange, but I'm glad they at least cover those. I have a friend on LiveJournal.com who'd done DS, she's totally happy with it. She did go into a little detail about a gaseous moment... you gotta laugh (at least the way she put it) Jat

Well, I'm not an expert, but there are some things that you can do to help with the gas issues ~ Flagyl, probiotics, etc. I think that if I were having surgery today I might choose this one. I have heard of some folks being successful with appealing their insurance, when they cover other WLS, and winning. I have been completely happy with my RNY, so that is an excellent option, as well. I, personally, didn't chose the band 'cuz I knew I could outwit it with ice cream and the like.
