Beans or peas for New Years?

So which do you eat on New Year's? I'm about to put my red beans on to boil. I lived in FL in the early 70's and that's what my friends there taught me and I've followed the trend across many places. I'm going to use turkey sausage to give it flavor and maybe even cook a tiny bit of rice to have with it. We are having our local "family" to dinner tonight and to play board games. It is snowing again here, coming close to a record for December. We have really enjoyed the beauty of the snow, but once we have to go back to work on Wednesday, I'll be done with it! LOL. Have a good evening and be safe! Connie

I didn't know there was a tradition for New Year's concerning legumes

Connie, Happy New Year! Okay, as a child and ever since I have always had pickled pigs feet, herring in wine sauce and sauerkraut!! Yum! My family is Irish Catholic (and alcoholic, which probably explains why they were able to always eat all these gross food together! LOL), but we geew up in Cincinnati, which has a lot of German traditions. I will be missing out on these foods this year, to be replaced by Pureed cottage cheese or some other liquidy yum since I am just 2 weeks out from my RNY. Enjoy your beans!!! I can smell them now! Yum!! Maureen

You can have pigs feet next year! or beans. My family is German and we had herring in cream sauce which I did have this year. It has lots of protein I found out. The beans I learned about in the south. Happy New Year to you! and to everyone! Connie

Hmmm...I never heard of that tradition. I didn't have either, but if I did choose one, it would be beans. Sounds like a fun evening. Happy New Year! Rachelle

For most African-Americans it's Black-Eye Peas, Greens, and Chittlins -- being a country girl the only one I really enjoy eating is greens. Each food is suppose to be significant for the New Year -- but I don't think so. You're suppose to have them to increase luck and money -- now what the Chittlins are for -- don't ask me -- never ate them -- extra gross. Hope everyone had a safe New Year. My bowling league hosted it's first New Year's Dinner and Dance -- it was elegant and off the hook. It was great seeing so many same-gender loving couples partying and dancing with their sweeties. I'm sure some of the pics are going to eventually be posted on our website.

NaDine, Nice Christmas pics! What an amazing change from your earlier pics. Congratulations! I am only 2 weeks out, but already seeing some changes in my face. On another note, how lucky you are to have a support such as your same-sex bowling league! Down here in Walton, KY Paula and I are pretty much isolated. There are no such social groups. When I lived in the Boston area for 2 years it was a totally different story and I felt so free to be who I am! We ended up in KY several years after moving back to my hometown of Cincinnati, OH. It is so beautiful here, but very backwars! We really miss the company of other couples. Have a great New Year! Maureen
