Anyone start the process without a PCP?
I was just curious if anyone ever started their WLS journey without having a PCP at first? I am sort of new to Georgia and have not gotten a primary care physician yet, as I have not had a problem to need one yet. Never really had a PCP for years as I never had any health problems except my weight. I did have another doctor who did my medically supervised diets, so I have that part of the process covered if insurance needs that. Any suggestions, etc?
If I meet with a bariatric surgeon, would he/she be able to recommend a PCP to me that would recommend the WLS?
I hope these are not dumb questions.....I just want to get started on the journey and make sure everything is in place for the process of approval, etc.
Any suggestions, advice, or personal experiences will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Hey Michael.....
I did have a PCP that I went to before surgery BUT you are not required to have one to support you....it all depends upon what your insurance requires. Mine required 6 mos of medically supervised diets. My PCP did not support me having this surgery for over 2 years. The greatest part is that we talked about diets and what I was doing for 2 years so when I went to her and told her that I was totally ready for surgery and I was going to have it with or without her support I asked for my medical records. After a long heart to heart, she was in total support of me, offered up my records, wrote me a letter, etc and I was approved in ONE day. A PCP is great for support and to help get some testing (blood work, determining co-morbidities, etc.).
I am new to GA too and got some good PCP references from this awesome board....it is a great networking tool....We need to use it as much as we can....
Take care,
Ann
